I've been reading up on the news that VMware's Server product (the follow on to GSX server) has been released as free (as in no cost, not open) software. Here's a link to the
press release.
But that's not what this entry is about. In this Linux Watch coverage, Yankee Group research fellow Laura DiDio is quoted as saying:
"Last fall Sun Microsystems initiated a similarly bold move when it opted to make its Solaris operating system free for customers who have one-, two- and four processor servers."
It's nice to be noticed, but it's wrong. Solaris is free for all types of systems, x64 and SPARC, no matter how many processors.
We must not be doing a good enough job getting the word out.
