I started to go further with my demo setup and whoops, ran into the first obstacles.I have to realize that we must go through some painfull tasks.*smile*

There is NO WAY continuing to set up desktop providers and to configure VDI as long as we do not have installed LDAP ( or you can use AD )!
So, right now, I am downloading Sun Directory Server Enterprise Edition.

Meanwile you can check this and also download and setup the LDAP Server.

The tasks are:
The easiest ones are to check if all services are up and running and some if some parameters were set:
1. enable iscsi target SMF service
# svcadm enable svc:/system/iscsitgt:default

2. the webpage recommends to limit the ARC cache of ZFS, for example to 2 GB
set zfs:zfs_arc_max = 2147483648

3.check and - eventually - enable ssh:
bash-3.2# svcs svc:/network/ssh:default
STATE STIME FMRI

4. check your http service:

5. check if the webservice for VirtualBox is enabled:

If the service is not enabled, as in this case, enable it by using svcadm:

and finally, we need to setup LDAP.
1. Get the Directory Server here at no cost, no kidding, as the webpage tells you:

Select Directory Server Enterprise Edition
Select Version 6.3.1
Select Compressed Archive ( zip )
Select Solaris 10 64x86, if you use an x86 box, like me.

and download the full version of 384 MB................. and configure the Directory Server.

Vor einiger Zeit hatte ich das x86 Server Configuration whitepaper in Form einer Praesentation fuer Kunden und Sun Partner erstellt, um Euch eine Hilfestellung bei der Konfiguration der x86 Systeme zu geben. Welcher HBA , Welches OS, welcher Storage ist supported und wo finde ich die Information. Diese Fragen sollten mit dem x86 Server Config Whitepaper beantwortet werden.
Schnell fand es Verbreitung und wurde von Kollegen ins englische, franzoesische und hollaendische uebersetzt, um es auch in ihren Laendern zu verteilen.

Dann wurde die Frage an mich gestellt, wo man denn Informationen zur Installation des Systems findet. Klar in den docs.sun.com. Aber dort steht auch nicht immer alles.. manches findet man auf den Herstellerseiten, zum Beispiel auch Tips und Tricks.
Ich habe mich nun bemueht, eine Wikiseite zu erstellen, in der ich diese Informationen gegliedert nach System , OS bzw. Hersteller sammele. Diese Seite wartet auch auf Euer Input und kann aktiv mit Euch erweitert werden.

Bitte fuehlt euch aufgefordert Eure Informationen hinzuzufuegen und sie mit anderen zu teilen!

Das Thema dieses Mal lautet:

Installation - Opensolaris
Das heisst, wir wollen gemeinsam Opensolaris installieren.

Anforderungen an die Teilnehmer:
Dazu wird 1 Laptop benoetigt, welches jeder Teilnehmer bitte selbst mitbringt.
Es gibt 3 Moeglichkeiten OpenSolaris zu installieren:

A) Installation auf der internen Festplatte
B) Installation als VM mit VirtualBox
c) Installation auf einer externen Festplatte bspw. als USB device

Fuer die einzelnen Moeglichkeiten benoetigt man folgende Ressourcen:
A) min. 1.5 GB freien Festplattenspeicher zur Erstellung der Osol Partition und 1 GB RAM

B) ein Laptop, welches zur Virtualisierung taugt. Das heisst, das Laptop sollte mit mehr als 1.5 GB RAM und mit mind. 2 CPU Cores ausgestattet sein. Ausserdem min. 1.5 GB freien Festplattenspeicher fuer das VM-image, welches angelegt wird als virtuelle Festplatte.
Und Virtualbox vorinstalliert. Unter www.virtualbox.org findet man eine Installationsanleitung und die Software als freien Download. Virtualbox kann auch unter Windows verwendet werden. Eine kurze Instalaltionsanleitung dazu findet sich hier

C) fuer die Installation von OpenSolaris wird ein externes Festplattengeraet benutzt. Dieses sollte natuerlich vom Laptop erkannt und angeschlossen sein.

Unter unserer Anleitung installieren wir OpenSolaris und schauen uns einige Features naeher an:

* die Benutzung von sharemgr(1M) zur Administration von NFS-shares ( Frank Batschulat )
* IPS ( Rolf Dietze ), und
* CIFS Client mit Anbindung an einen CIFS Server ( Claudia Hildebrandt )
* Tips & Tricks bei Verwendung von OpenSolaris mit Laptops ( Detlef Drewanz )

Hi there,

again I updated the x64 Server configuration paper with some installation support links and information.

I decided to give the baby a name ( hahaha ).
It is now called x86 Server Configuration Whitepaper ( waa hooo - sounds great )and the files named x86_ServerConfigWP.pdf ( german version ) or x86_ServerConfigWP_engl.pdf ( english version ).

Recently I heard about some claims of a customer about the installation process of x64/x86 servers.
He said, he had some problems and issues with OS drivers, the ILOM and BIOS firmware and settings and the installation of drivers for Sun-installed components option cards when using Windows or supported Linux OSes.

I like to point to this page:
Sun Installation Assistant ( SIA ).

SIA Features are:

* Supports booting from a local or remote CD, USB flash drive or Network image
* Provides a graphical wizard interface
* Scans your server and installs the drivers for Sun-installed components and option cards [1]
* Optionally checks with Sun for updates to OS drivers and Sun server software
* Optionally upgrades ILOM Service Processor (SP) and BIOS firmware
* Deploys Linux, Windows and Sun-supported applications to your Sun x64 systems
* Optionally deploys using unattended scripted mode and PXE (Linux only)

The weblink provides a download of the wizard for all x64/x86 servers including blades, and links to the manual, to a BigAdmin Feature Article and finally also to a discussion forum.

I updated my paper "How to configure x64 Servers" x64_server.pdf ( german and english x64_server_engl.pdf version available ) by adding the link.

Hallo mal wieder,

dieses Mal möchte ich eine kurze Anleitung über die Installationsschritte und Konfiguration der Sunray Services hier bereitstellen.

Sun Partner und Kunden testen stets gerne die Sun Ray Software, bevor sie sich am Ende entschliessen, diese auch in ihrer Umgebung einzusetzen.

Diese Teststellungen werden oft von uns SEs begleitet, um den Partnern und Kunden bei Installationsproblemen und bei der Konfiguration mit Rat und Tat behilflich zu sein.

Die Teststellungen, sprich die praktische Handhabung der Sun Ray Dienste zu erfahren, hilft tatsaechlich sehr dabei, dieses Produkt kennenzulernen.

Aber natürlich nur, wenn Kunden es auch tatsächlich nutzen können und feststellen, wie einfach es doch ist, die Sun Ray Dienste zu installieren, zu konfigurieren und schliesslich zu administrieren. Und es ist einfach!! 3 Befehle - fertig ist die Grundfunktion... zusätzliche Features gibt es viele ...

Daher dachte ich, vielleicht hilft ja diese kurze Anleitung die ersten Schritte zu gehen und kann bei der Installation und Konfiguration unterstützen und zwar so, dass auch "newbies" die Sunray Services sofort nutzen können. Deswegen sind auch nicht alle Features beschrieben, sondern jene, die die Grundfunktionalitäten beschreibt.

Verbesserungsvorschläge, zum Beispiel welche Themen noch hinzugefügt werden sollten, sind natürlich willkommen.
