Edinburgh University Systems Administrators Day
Thursday Dec 11, 2008
I blogged about this event a while back. We encountered a gap of understanding in explaining to my co-workers in sales that this was not training, its is not marketing, we are just going to talk technical about Solaris topics which University Systems Administrators might find interesting. A Solaris Academic Sys Admin mashup might be the best frame of reference for the intended event.
24 Administrators from various universities north and south of the boarder attended the event hosted by the University of Edinburgh Information Services Department. The aim of the event was to cover topics that may be of interest to Sys Admins from academic institutions. I think we were successful in avoiding any marketing content, so it was all deep techie or filling in parts of the technical big picture only. The areas covered included but were not limited to the OpenSolaris packaging system, what the various columns in iostat really mean, what Sun is doing to make the patching experience better and how does Sun deal with security incidents. Much more rubber meets the road, than what sort of tyres to buy.
There was lots of good discussion and questions during the breaks about a whole range of topics.
Thanks to the other speakers, James Macfarlane, Paul Roberts, and Don O'Malley. Dawar Ghaznavi for the internal organisation. Also much gratitude to Tony Weir at Edinburgh for hosting it.
We hope to run further events in different parts of the UK over the next 3 months. We are close to setting the dates for a London based event, with plans for a Manchester and Wales/south West day in progress.
