Garmin 305 : I am not a gadget person, but ....

Tuesday Apr 29, 2008

I am really not a gadget person. I am typically more worried about value delivered than the potential of a new gadget. So when the 2 PhD students mentioned here suggested I get a heart rate monitor so I would know how hard I was training, I was a little sceptical. However, even after 2 outing which had very different profiles, just knowing how far and how much accent and being able to answer the question of could/should I have been working harder, I am impressed.

It was suggested I looked at a Polar monitor, but the software did not run under OSX which was a must. So a little Google based research highlighted the Garmin 205 which in addition to the heart rate monitor and usual timing features, has a GPS so you know how far, how fast and how much accent.

The software is easy to use, available for both the Mac and the PC on the CD that comes as standard.

and yes, you do tend to run faster when you wear it!

You can also upload your workouts from your Garmin for free at motionbased.com (soon transitioning to some new URL) so that your friends can view them.

thanks for the info William, I will check it out. This does assume that my times are good enough for me to want to upload them:-)
