The return of University SysAdmin days in the UK

Friday Nov 28, 2008

A few days ago I found a T-Shirt from a UKUUG conference held in Stirling in 1992. It is now at the end of its life being used as a rag while painting, but it did remind me how as a junior University Administrator these conferences were a eye opener to the wider world. I meet people like Phil Harman, Rob Gingell and Keith Beirman who were just technically impressive in what they knew. Throughout my time in Sun I have wanted to see these types of event happen again.

On a smaller scale and more regionally based, over the next few months we will be running technical only, deep dive anti-marketing days. The first is in Edinburgh on the 9th of December, hosted at the University of Edinburgh. So if you fancy a day listening to talks by people I think know what they are talking about on

  • ZFS
  • Zones
  • Patching
  • Security
  • DTrace
  • OpenSolaris futures

These will not be brochure level technical I can assure. Part of the reason for these days is to get the perspective from engineers who either create the technology, fix it when it breaks or help customers put it into practice in a novel way which adds significant value. I am very pleased that Phil Harman has agreed to be one of the speakers on the 9th.

There will also be a panel session. In 1992 timeframe the panel used to get beat up for the removal of the C compiler from /usr/bin as part of the Solaris 2.0 port. Lets hope things have moved on from that.

If you work in a University and live in the Scotland or Northern England and fancy a day xmas shopping in Edinburgh, then drop me a mail or contact your account manager (probably Rod or Peter).

3 other days are in the planning (though Edinburgh is very nice at this time of year) to cover the London area, Wales plus the south West and central UK (Manchester, Birminghman, Leeds, etc). Once I we have dates, I will post here and you will probably hear from your account manager. You can also drop me a mail and I will let you know the where and when.

Clive,

Using "/etc/system" as a tag, in fact anything which uses backslashes, causes problems for BSC, Roller, and most web software.

It's because "/" is reserved character for URL notation.

Here's a post I wrote all about it as an issue: http://blogs.sun.com/eclectic/entry/tagging_tags_blog_tag_policy

I can see that lack of tag standardisation and compatibility with URI / URL notation is going to be a big problem as we start to transition to web3.0 / the semantic web.

Hope your well and all the best,

Wayne
