Wired is Hot
Props to Wired magazine for receiving the Magazine Award's top prize of General Excellence.  I discovered this via Chris Anderson's posting on the Long Tail blog - a self-proclaimed "public diary on the way to a book."

The Wired team submitted the February, October and November 2004 editions.  Obviously they chose well.

I assume that the National Magazine Award is for content more than cover art, but I have to point out that my favorite Wired cover artwork for 2004 was the March Googlemania cover of Larry and Sergey.  Cool stuff.

Wired sucks. I have the first 4 years of issues. I started reading it when the 3rd issue came out. I had to ride my bike across town to pick it up every month (plus a large bag of Circus Animals and Gatorade). But around the 4th year they just fell apart, Negraponte left not long after (98?), the editorials got worse and worse, the Fetish section dropped in quality, they added those stupid mega-stats pages, and the front matter-news grew full of useless information. They pumped the magazine to twice its size with ads, Saphire let go of the back cover, and the technical goodies left completely. I used to use Wired as a way to find this months hot gopher site, then it just degrades slowing into a run of the mill boring ass liberal-slanted rag with a tech twist that always seemed to get the story wrong or bury it under a pile of lameness. Even the coverwork has degraded over time, although I'll admit they are better than most other mags outside of Harpers and the UK GQ. Oh well. I wish the tech would come back and the political and activism crap would purge.
