I'm back from vacation. We spent a week in Transylvania at a place called Tusnádfürdõ, a really nice city at the river Olt. This part of Romania is inhabited mainly by Hungarians, about 700 000 Szeklers, or Székelys as they call themselves (they are part of the almost 2 million Hungarian minority living in Romania). It was an interesting experience to meet with something very similar to my own culture 400 kms deep inside the borders of another country...

We rented and shared a house with my girlfriend, some girls from her class (they are all 3rd year law students), and the boyfriend of one of the girls, who turned out to be a medic student. Some of them came to see the Tusvanyos summer university, but I personally preferred to just relax and visit nearby towns and museums, although even Viktor Orbán - former Prime Minister of Hungary gave a visit. Unfortunately we all missed this event as we visited the Lake Saint Anna and the Mohos wasteland instead (see pictures below).

One talk I'm very sorry to miss was the talk of Albert-László Barabási, author of Linked, "The New Science of Networks". I was not able to make it to his speech in Budapest last year, and now I missed it again in Transylvania. Real shame:( I felt a bit idiot when I ordered his book from Amazon.com just a week before the Hungarian translation appeared in local stores:)

This building is in the centre of Kézdivásárhely. The city is known for a Székely man called Áron Gábor who cast a number of cannons by melting down church bells during Hungary's 1848-1849 War of Independence. Although almost all of Transylvania was occupied by the Habsburgs late 1848, these cannons allowed this region to remain independent until Bem's army defeated the Austrian armies and retook the county. The museum on the other side of the square has a really nice collection of old tools used by the guilds of Kézdivásárhely as well as some historical collection from 1848-49.

This is the Székely Museum in Sepsiszentgyörgy. There are some really nice exhibitions: 1701-0711 Rákóczi War of Independence, 1848 War of Independence, a sword collection (sabres, long swords, two handed swords, turkish swords), and traditional folk stuff like interiors of Székely houses, etc).

A Hungarian/Székely meal: bean gulasch, in a restaurant nor far from the museum (it's called Szent György Pince - St. George Pit). We had a really good meal, and it wasn't expensive at all: I payed 280 000 Lei (less then 8 Euros). This was one of the best restaurants in the city by the way.

Saturday, Viktor Orban was demanding autonomy for the Székelys. Instead of listening to his speech we decided to visit Lake Saint Anna. The lake is 1000 meters above the sea, in a volcanic crater that last erupted some 8000 years ago.

Mohos láp - Mohos wasteland. This used to be another volcano, and is located a few kilometres from the lake. Actually there used to be another lake inside this crater as well until the volcano under Anna erupted. The lake was covered by ash that created a 10 meter thick peat cover on top of the water. The trees are dwarf firs, that cannot grow larger because they would sink in the mud... There are all kinds of animals inhabiting the area (we were told that a mother bear was recently sighted with three little bears which is very strange considering that bears tend to have only one bruin).

A barátnőm valószinűleg az egyik legnagyobb Alanis Morisette rajongó az országban. Nem csoda tehát, hogy múlt hét elején összesen közel 1300 km-t utaztunk azért, hogy megnézzük és meghalgassuk Alanis koncertjét a Salzburg Arénában. Hétfő reggel bezsúfoltuk magunkat a Megane Berline-be (épp egyhetes volt aznap az autó, tehát ezzel az úttal sikerült is abszolválni a bejáratás idejét), majd egy viszonylag eseménytelen út után megérkeztünk. Egy korsó Edelweis eltüntetése és a megfelelő mennyiségű Mozart tallér + Milka csoki megvásárlása után összesen másfél órát vártunk az Arena előtt az egyre duzzadó tömeggel a kapuk kinyitására. Apropó, azt észrevettétek már, hogy az osztrákoknál kapható Milka és az itthoni igen durván különbözik mind ízben, mind minőségileg (az árat meg ne is említsük)?

Szóval, 7 előtt néhány perccel beengedték a tömeget: iszonyatos tolakodás után igen gyorsan sikerült bejutni és szinte közvetlenül a korlát mögött elhelyezkedni. Mi négyen mentünk (baratném, a huga, Eszter, aki a barétnőm barátnője és én), pár percen belül mégis egy kisebb tömegnyi magyar állt körülöttünk egy "Szeretlek" feliratú lepedővel felszerelkezve. Ehhez annyit érdemes tudni, hogy Alanis nagyszülei 56-os magyarok, Kanadában telepedtek le, és az édesanyja akcentus nélkül beszél magyarul. A lánya meg szinte egyáltalán nem (az ominózus "Szeretlek" az egyike azon szavaknak amiket mégis).

A közvetlenül mellettünk álló lányról kiderült, hogy nem más, mint a Zanzibár Rita nevű énekese. Small world. Utoljára azt hiszem a 2002-es EFOTT-on voltam a koncertjükön még a Schönherz koleszos társasággal (akiktől ezúton kérek elnézést, hogy olyan ritkán tolom vissza a képem a kollégiumba). Egyesek a Vénus új énekesnőjét is felfedezni vélték egy kicsit arrébb a tömegben, de erről nincsenek megerősített információim. Amúgy az ivararányok eléggé hihetetlenek voltak: az XX/XY arány kb 80/20 lehetett az egész teremre vetítve...

A koncert kicsit késve kezdődött, és még valami noname előzenekarral is meg kellett küzdenie a tömegnek, de 9 után jött Alanis és majdnem két órán keresztül diktálta az iramot. Kimondottan élveztem a koncertet, bár én inkább mentem volna idén is egy újabb Dream Theater koncertre (ha már egyszer 1998-ban, 2000-ben és 2002-ben is eljöttek Budapestre, idén is útbaejthettek volna minket...). Mindegy, kifejezetten jó volt Alanis is, főleg a 47 eurós jegyárat tekintetbe véve:)

Ami engem nagyon meglepett, az a biztonsági emberek viselkedése volt. Egyrészt, mindent be lehetett vinni. Fényképezőgépet (na mondanom sem kell, hogy az enyém a kocsi csomagterében pihent), inni és ennivalót, palackot, meg úgy általában bármit. Másrészt folyamatosan hordták a vizet műanyag poharakban az első soroknak akik meg folyamatosan adogatták hátra a többi embernek.

11 után vége lett a koncertnek, elindultunk kifelé, nem vettünk 25 euróért Alanis pólót, ellenben a lányok beizgultak egy zugárus portékájára, aki 2 euróért A1-es méretű Alanis nyomatokat árult az utcán (az albérlet azóta már megkapta a maga két Alanis poszterét, úgyhogy mostantól minden reggel úgy ténfereghetek ki a konyhába, hogy két darab 60 centis Morissette arc bámul rám az ajtókról)...

Ekkor jött az út izgalmasabb része, ugyanis szállásunk csak Bécsben volt (Eszter nagybátyja rendelkezik egy bécsi lakással, amit éppen nem használtak, és így ingyen megúsztuk a szállás részét az útnak). Bécs Salzburgtól jó két és fél óra a sztrádán 130-140 körüli tempóval. Linznél megálltunk tankolni, de addigra már mindhárom lány aludt. Én csak félig. Megpróbáltam egy Red Bull-lal valamennyire ébren tartani magam, ami többé kevésbé sikerült is. Egészen Bécsig, ahol már megint majdnem leragadt a szemem. Ekkor már hajnal 2 volt és szembesültünk azzal a problémával, hogy meg kellene találnunk a lakást, amit egyelőre a térképen sem találtunk meg. Azután mégis. Igazából nem túl vicces dolog egy órán keresztül a szukcesszív aproximáció módszerét alkalmazni egy ismeretlen városban: menni egy kicsit, megállni, utcatáblát nézni, térképet nézni, irányt belőni, és ezt az egészet iterálni amíg oda nem érünk.

Másnap már csak a hazaút maradt, de csak hármasban, mert Eszter még egy napig Bécsben maradt, hogy onnan Pozsony érintésével egy fapados járaton lejusson a dalmát tengerpartra, ahol a családja már két napja megkezdte a nyaralást:) Onnan szinte interrupt nélkül jön ő is Erdélybe, ahol jövő héten másik 7-8 jogászhallgató lány társaságában 1 hetet túrázgatás és kikapcsolódás következik:) Hiába, nyár van...

More than two weeks without an update...

The thin client project is progressing quite well, though we run into some unforeseen problems almost each and every day. For example, configuring Identity Synchronization in a Sun Cluster environment was a bit more challenging task than we hoped. The software is built around a message queue that is used to synchronize user objects between a Sun Java Directory Server and a Windows Active Directory. Components connect or plug into the directory sources and send events through the message queue everytime a new user object is created or an attribute/password is modified for an existing object.

In our setup the Sun directory was already installed on a Sun Cluster and it turned out that IdSync doesn't support the HA environment. There is a cluster agent for the Message Queue component, but we had no luck in getting it to work with IdSync: we couldn't add the startup arguments that IdSync uses to the HA agent.

So we installed Message Queue on both nodes of the cluster, installed IdSync on the node that the LDAP server was running on, and got it to work on this particular node. The LDAP server is installed on both nodes and uses shared disk to store the data. IdSync installed itself into the shared directory. We replicated the configuration of the message queue (/etc/imq/*, /var/imq/*) and the IdSync startup script (/etc/init.d/isw - the software is on shared disk, the configuration data is stored in LDAP, so no other files needed to be copied). Now we could start IdSync on any cluster node the directory server is running on. Right now I'm waiting for one of our cluster gurus to finish the configuration by writing a GDS script and adding the idsync resource to the ldap resource group.
