Unfortunate incidents

One would think that with Romania signed to join the European Union, unfortunate and evil events that happened in the past cannot happen again. Today's news report otherwise. Early this week a number of 15-17 year old boys were beaten up by a gang of Romanian men because they were speaking Hungarian in public in the streets of Sepsiszentgyörgy. The majority of the city (about 75%) is of Hungarians nationality (I've blogged about visiting there last year). Now authorities are trying to convince Szekler and Hungarian youngster not to retaliate...

I just hope this is not another sign of a new wave of rascist events targeting the 2-2,5 million Hungarians living outside Hungary in the southern parts of the Carpathian basin. It was shocking enough to see the pictures from Serbia during the last few months.

"Die Hungarians" - a sign from Vojvodina on a house owned by Hungarians...

What's the root of the antagonism towards the Hungarian minority? Is it simple racism, or are the Hungarian communities typically wealthier or poorer than the 'local' population, singling them out for resentment? My father used to work extensively in the former Yugoslavia and was great friends with a Hungarian Serb from the Krajina valley. This guy had a pretty tough time...

Chris,

In Serbia: many Serbs moved from Kosovo to Vojvodina in the last few years (after the U.S and NATO bombed Kosovo "free") modifying the ethnic map and causing troubles between Serbs and Hungarians living there together for centuries.

In Romania: I don't really know. Maybe the fact that the Hungarian Party became part of the government is causing some people pain... If you think you're living in an ethnically clean state (like many do in some postcommunist Eastern European countries) and the facts prove you wrong... it must be hard to accept it.
