Sun's Hotspot JVM = Reliable Performance
Take a look at the latest SPECappserver2004 World Record results. BEA Weblogic running on Sun Fire T2000 servers powered by UltraSPARC T1 processors and Sun J2SE 5.0_06. Thats right BEA's "Record setting Weblogic 9" set the world records running on Sun's Hotspot JVM. SPECjappserver2004 World Record (Multi-Node) SPECjappserver2004 World Record (2-Node) But how can this be? Sounds like BEA Weblogic relies on the cool performance and reliability of Sun's Hotspot JVM to achieve their world record performance on SPECjappserver2004.

Perhaps it's really hard to port efficiently to Niagra?

Very much on the contrary Tom. J2SE 5.0_06 on Solaris/SPARC is a generic sparc binary with very, very little that is UltraSPARC T1 specific. All J2SE 5.0 updates and the latest J2SE 1.4.2 updates have been testing on US-T1 without modification.

Maybe it's because it was Sun that did the submission and wanted to use its own JVM? Another interesting question - why don't Sun submit a record breaking result with their own app server?

Hi Henrik, nice to hear you chime in. Actually Hotspot is the only JVM supported by BEA Weblogic on Solaris SPARC. With all of your announcements about your upcoming Solaris port, why didn't BEA push to run on JRockit? We continue to work on Sun application server performance and are fast approaching the day that we will submit record numbers.

Actually, Sun posted pretty respectable SPECjAppServer numbers with our appserver. Are they as good as BEA's? Not in absolute performance; but in terms of price/performance, you bet. Are BEA's numbers really good enough to justify the large price tag for their appserver (vs. our free appserver)?

I think you have an error on your links (right now they both point to the same highest score, I think you want:

SPECjappserver2004 World Record (Multi-Node)

SPECjappserver2004 World Record (2-Node)

Where the Multi-node, used only 6 Sun Fire T2000s as application servers and used a Sun Fire E6900 as the database server. More info also at: BM Seer on SPECjappserver2004 World Record (Multi-Node)

The 2-node used a Single Sun Fire T2000 using a Sun Fire V490 as a Database server. More info also at: BM Seer on SPECjappserver2004 World Record (2-Node)
