JDK 5.0_08 is now publicly available on Java.sun.com!. Another fine day for Sun Java Performance. This is our highest performing and most reliable release to date. Why was the 32bit JVM not the 64bit one used for the benchmarks?

The 32-bit JVM is generally 10-15% faster running allocation intensive workloads when running within a 32-bit address space. Specifically a 32-bit JVM running a 2GB heap will be faster than a 64-bit JVM running a 2GB heap. There are techologies such as pointer compression that allow a 64-bit JVM to run at 32-bit speeds when running withing a 32-bit address space. But then on the other hand you can simply run a 32-bit JVM in that situation :-)
