SpreadFirefox Light I just cleaned up my home directory a bit and came across this old picture. It shows a German newspaper ad for OpenOffice.org that was published in a newspaper in the Munich area in January 2004. In case you can read German and are interested in the content, here is a PDF version of the ad.

More Fun Ads Here are the winners of this year's ADC (Art Directors Club) awards in Germany. Some pictures are a bit small or the text is in German, but as you can see English is used more an more in German print ads.

Fun Stuff As you know from my latest blog entries, I like creative stuff, especially when it's funny. Last year I bought the book "lovemarks" which is written by the CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi. I liked the book a lot and therefore I had to check out their website. Here you can find some of their work. Most of it I think is pretty cool!

Being creative Yesterday my wife and I went to the exhibition "LeadAwards 2005" here in Hamburg. The best articles, ad campaigns, ad texts, ad pictures out of German magazines were shown there. The first half of the exibition was very interesting, since I enjoy watching creative and funny ads. The second half was a bit boring.
Nevertheless, the gold winner in the category ad of the year was also my favorite. You can see it here. You have to click on the link "1. WMF 'Die Fliege', KNSK" under the category "2. Anzeige des Jahres". BTW, Apple's iPod campagne won in the category best ad campaign.
Since I like creative, interesting, cool and funny ads, I can recommend a few books that I have digged out about this topic. I also found some nice books about branding and packaging design. Here they are:
● Creative Advertising by Mario Pricken
● Designing Brand Identity by Alina Wheeler
● eat me by Ben Hargreaves
● Branding & Packaging - The ultimate Marketing Solution by Murray J. Lubliner
● Absolut Book by Richard W. Lewis
● Design Secrets: Advertising by Hickey
● Logos: Making a Strong Mark by Anistatia Miller and Jared Brown
● Logo Design Workbook by Sean Adams and Noreen Morioka
● emotional branding by Gobé
● lovemarks by Kevin Roberts
● Packaging Graphics & Design by Renée Phillips
● Challenging the big Brands by Judith Evans and Cheryl Dangel Cullen
● Design Secrets: Packaging by Fishel
What I like about all these books is that they talk about the topics very visually, i.e. lots of examples are included. Picture wise I found PHOTOS.COM pretty useful. Unfortunately the pictures there are pretty expensive if you just want to be creative for the fun of it. Oh, another useful, but much less visual book that I really like(d) is "How to get Ideas" by Jack Foster. It's a great book!

Thanks for your feedback In one of my recent entries I published an OpenOffice.org/StarOffice poster design that I created just because I like to do some creative work from time to time. The poster was no official poster, it was just my private work. Nevertheless, quite a few people approached me and sent me their feedback which was interesting and useful. Therefore, I decided to share two more of my "just for fun" poster designs with you.
I created the first one to illustrate that with Sun's identity and desktop solutions users don't need to use post-it notes to remember multiple passwords.
The second poster shows one advantage of Sun's Sun Ray ultra-thin client technology. Instead of having to carry around a heavy notebook that might even cause back problems for some people, the Sun Ray technology just requires a little smartcard for session mobility. With the new features in the Sun Ray Server Software 3 even DSL connections are supported that allow work-from-home concepts.
