"The Sun rises on thin clients"
Another person who likes our Sun Ray ultra-thin clients:

"Walking up to a Sun Microsystems Inc. Sun Ray thin client and popping in a smart card is actually pretty cool. We did so recently and were more impressed by the responsiveness of the system than anything else (lots of companies make good thin clients)—the card goes in, the applications come up in about the blink of an eye. The new Sun Ray 2 and Sun Ray 2 FS thin clients offer a little something for everyone. According to the company, the Sun Ray 2 consumes only 4 watts of power, which, if true, is fantastic news. The average thick desktop uses more like 80 watts. The Sun Ray 2 FS supports two monitors, which intelligence analysts, developers and network operations personnel will like."

Excellent Sun Ray review by eWeek
Here is an excellent review by eWeek of the new Sun Ray 2FS ultra-thin client. The product got an "excellent" rating for interoperability and power consumption. I hope to get one at home sometime soon as well. I'm using my laptop less and less since the Sun Ray technology supports global hot desking. I just continue to use the same session in Santa Clara, California that I used one day before in Hamburg, Germany. Thus, the mobility concept illustrated by me here really is reality at Sun today.

"Sun pulls thin client blitz with a Wyse huddle"
"Fresh from its high-five with Google, Sun Microsystems is now partnering with Wyse Technology to create an "end-to-end" thin client solution by combining Sun's Secure Global Desktop Software (Sun SGDS) with Wyse hardware. Expect the official announcement later on Wednesday. But calling it thin client does not do it justice. Call it uber-client."

"Desktop Solution Powered by Sun Ray"
"End-users will see improved reliability of their systems as the Sun Ray thin client has no local disk drives or processors that could be points of failure. IT professionals will be pleased with the improved security of the integrated solution, as the SAVVIS utility allows for dynamic provisioning of firewalls and defense-in-depth architectures. All businesses can benefit from the unique economic model supporting the service, which requires no up-front capital expense, lowers operational costs, and significantly improves scalability."

More details and opinions about the Tarantella acquisition
InformationWeek writes:
"The acquisition of Tarantella ultimately will make it easier for Sun customers to deploy desktops that run either open-source StarOffice applications or those from Microsoft, says David Friedlander, a Forrester Research senior analyst. In the short term, Tarantella's Global Secure Desktop won't deliver much incremental revenue to Sun, but longer term, it could help Sun's overall desktop strategy."

CNETAsia writes:
"With Tarantella, Sun hopes its Sun Ray product will be more useful because it will be able to run Windows, mainframe and other applications. "We'd like the volumes to be higher," Loiacono said of Sun Ray sales."

I-Newswire writes:
"Using Tarantella's technology and Solaris, more customers like Time Warner Cable, Qualcomm and the US Department of Defense will be able to implement Sun's innovative Sun Ray ultra-thin clients with full Microsoft interoperability as well as access to their Mainframe, Linux and other applications.

The acquisition will further Sun's strategy to deliver the most comprehensive set of services for Solaris; from traditional system services, to application, naming, directory, availability and now interoperability and mobility services. More than 1.3 million licenses of Solaris 10 have been distributed since January 31, 2005. It is certified to run on more than 375 non-Sun hardware platforms, runs on AMD x64, Intel Xeon and Sun's SPARC processor architectures and is priced less than either Red Hat Enterprise Linux or SuSE Linux."

Computerworld writes:
"Loiacono said Tarantella has 12,000 customers and technology that works "on virtually all applications, networks and devices," including PCs, thin clients, handsets or automobile dashboards -- "anything with a Java-enabled browser.""
