New Thunderbird Features "Developers of the Mozilla Foundation's open-source e-mail client have added a podcasting feature to its arsenal and improved its defense against phishing attacks. [...] Podcasting is a recent Internet phenomenon which takes its name from Apple Computer's iPod digital audio player. Podcast creators publish sound files online that are then downloaded by interested parties. The technique uses RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, which allows simple forms of content such as blogs to be repetitively syndicated across the Internet and has enabled many people to reach a global audience with self-published radio shows. [...]
Developers list close collaboration with the Lightning Project--which aims to integrate the open-source Sunbird calendaring solution into Thunderbird--as an agenda item for the far-off Thunderbird 2.0 release. They would also like to "solve the information overload problem" common to heavy e-mail users by looking into implementing a tabbed solution similar to the one used by Web browsers such as Firefox, Opera and some third-party Internet Explorer add-ons."

"Microsoft Needs More than Tabbed Browsing" "There are numerous other things that Microsoft can do to make Internet Explorer a competitive browser functionally and feature wise. What really intrigues me is that Microsoft only seems interested in eliminating competition, and not catering to its users. Microsoft clearly has the resources to define the software industry, but they choose not to do that. I am all for the goal of eliminating competition, but they need do that with better products and continued support to their customers. Microsoft can learn a lot from Firefox and the things that have made it a success. The company will certainly need more than tabbed browsing in 7.0 to get knowledgeable users to switch back over to Internet Explorer."

Combining the engines of Mozilla Foundation's Firefox and Microsoft's Internet Explorer in a single browser is a neat trick, but Firefox is smaller, simpler, just as safe, and--in some important ways--more functional.

"Lightning lead developer Mike Shaver interview" (Calendar) "I don't think we're going to do free/busy in the 1.0 plan, but I think it's an addition that makes a lot of sense for a follow-on release. That's an important part of group scheduling and calendar sharing, and it's an area in which a calendar program can really make a user's life easier.
Calendar sharing will be present to varying degrees. With a CalDAV server, you should be able to subscribe to shared calendars, subject to the constraints of the server itself. For single-writer/multiple-reader webcal, things just Just Work, as they do with Sunbird and iCal and other such ICS-over-HTTP calendar tools."

"IBM backs Firefox in-house" I just found this article:
"IBM is encouraging its employees to use Firefox, aiding the open-source Web browser's quest to chip away at Microsoft's Internet Explorer."
I personally don't know anybody at Sun who is still using Internet Explorer. I'm wondering why it took IBM so long to figure out that Mozilla/Firefox is such a cool technology!?
