Cool: Matisse GUI Builder in NetBeans IDE 5.0 BETA
Cool, NetBeans IDE 5.0 BETA just got announced. I'm not really a developer anymore, but I do want to play with the OpenOffice.org/StarOffice SDK soon again to create some demo add-on components. I'm really looking forward to using NetBeans IDE 5.0 BETA for that, since the Matisse GUI builder should come very handy.

"Gosling Says NetBeans 4.1 Recapturing Mo'"
"The latest release comes as NetBeans seems – on the surface – to be losing momentum to the Eclipse Open Source IDE. But, with these new features and a pick-up in developer use, NetBeans is “a long way from dead,” insists Sun’s James Gosling Java creator and now CTO of Sun's Developer Products group."

NetBeans Interview with Gosling and Cramer
"Cramer: The big key feature is J2EE 1.4 development, and working on there the ability to work on EJBs for mere human beings. What took so long? I know, I know. EJBs are complicated, so we spent a lot of time with the EJB team and the tool team together and worked very hard to make EJB development a lot easier."

"NetBeans 4.1 focused on open source mobile development"
"In just six months, as it has gone from Version 3.x to Version 4.1, the software has been downloaded 1 million times, he told ZDNet, because "NetBeans makes developing mobile apps just brain-dead simple. We can get people building an application in 10 minutes." It does this through a visual development environment for mobility and support for web applications and services as well as J2ME and J2EE."

"Sun shines brightly on Java developers"
"With the latest iteration of NetBeans (Sun’s integrated development environment or IDE) a developer can, for example, just right mouse click to select the entire enterprise bean to generate look-up code, Shin said. Prior to 4.1, a developer would have had to write that portion of the code.

Also a variety of database operations can be performed without leaving the IDE, Shin said. NetBeans 4.1 also features wizards to create Web services and Web service clients, according to the company.

Another longtime Java shop is Parlay Entertainment Inc., an Oakville, Ont.-based online-games developer. CTO Perry Malone said he likes what he sees in Sun’s new tools, especially the ability to create more streamlined code."

"Ant: Building a Better Build File"
"From the developer who uses VIM or Emacs to the developer who uses a more complex IDE such as NetBeans, Eclipse, or IntelliJ's Idea, Jakarta's Ant has made their life much easier and more consistent. However, there does seem to be a growing trend to make build files that are overly complex and difficult to maintain."
