The pregnancy is over
The pregnancy is finally over! A new baby is born! And look how cute it is! ;-)

Yes, I'm talking about OpenSolaris. My wife would most likely kill me if I was talking about my baby, because she for sure knows that she herself has not been pregnant over the last few months.

Today, on June 14, the OpenSolaris project came to real life. Now that it's out in the beautiful but tough world, it will have to face many challenges. However, I'm convinced that the pilot project members together with the Sun engineers will help this baby grow up. Soon it will learn to crawl, then to walk and eventually run.

I'm also convinced that the OpenSolaris parents will have to deal with difficult decisions in the future. Once the OpenSolaris project becomes a teenager, it will want to be treated like a grown up, and not like the little kid it used to be.

Sun has learned a lot from all the different open source projects that it is involved in. I myself am working on the OpenOffice.org project. Yes, in the past, Sun has made many small and big mistakes regarding OpenOffice.org. The same happens within a family where people say or do things that they do not really mean.

Nevertheless, I'm convinced that all of "Sun's" open source projects will converge towards something great and successful. Yes, most definitely there will be more arguments, misunderstandings, fights, and tears. However, in the end, we all will be one happy family.

I at least welcome my little brother (sister?) in the larger open source family! I'm proud to be a relative of this little guy! Happy birthday!

Interview with OpenSolaris Developers
"Most operating system reviews and developer interviews rely on technical points to explain what a project is about and what benefits users might derive from it. We rarely hear from the people responsible for the lion's share of the work in the open source software world. So here's a less technical interview with some members of the OpenSolaris development team."

"Solaris 10 - UNIX for the people?"
This guy apparently has not really tried to understand what the target audience of Solaris 10 is when he says:

"While Solaris 10 is surely a professional OS for insiders, I can't understand the hype SUN made about it. In many aspects Solaris is an OS from yesterday, from glory days where UNIX Workstations dominated a lot of markets. Those days have passed and the question is, why you should use Solaris instead of a modern operating system, especially if we're talking about the x86."

Yes, for people who are installing Solaris 10 in order to turn their PC into a UNIX-based gaming machine, or a all-you-can-eat-is-installed-at-once box will be disappointed. However, everybody interested in a rock solid administration or development workstation should evaluate new features like containers and DTrace. Although most Linux distros come with multiple different browsers, office applications, and games, most of them do not include the high-end enterprise tools.

However, I have to admit that the author is right regarding the installation process. The installation process definitely could be more user friendly. Also the default configuration of the Java Desktop System could be a little more targeted at or customized for administrators and developers.

"Trusted OS to the Security Rescue"
"General-purpose operating systems have strengthened their reliance on this principle by fine-tuning the privileges of applications and users. For example, Solaris 10 has new process rights management that limits an application's rights to the bare minimum required for it to run. In this system, even if an application is compromised by a buffer overflow or an unpatched vulnerability, an attacker cannot increase his or her privileges on a machine. In the Linux world, Exec Shield and Pax are each vying to become the preferred technology for protecting the memories of Linux servers by limiting the damage compromised applications can do."
