Alternatives to Word and Windows at Israeli schools
"Even the unadventurous Israeli education system may soon discover that there is (computerized) life after Microsoft. The country's schools will forgo Word and Windows in favor of parallel programs from Sun Microsystems. For the first time, the education system's tenders committee has authorized cooperation in principle with Sun, in a move that could undermine Microsoft's sovereignty in Israeli classrooms."

More details about Karstadt's migration to StarOffice (German)
More details about Karstadt's migration to StarOffice can be found in this German article. Karstadt is one of the largest German retailers (maybe THE largest?!) and probably can be compared to US stores like Target or Sears. Karstadt uses 2,500 copies of StarOffice.

German department store chain saves money with StarOffice
As can be read in this German article, the German department store chain Karstadt saves about 60% in operating costs due to their recent switch to Linux and StarOffice. Quite impressive, I think! In case you don't know Karstadt, Karstadt has about 32,000 employees and had in 2006 an annual revenue of close to 5 billion Euro. Thus, we're not talking about a small company here.

Positive Sun Weblog Publisher Review
Computerworld just published a positive Sun Weblog Publisher Review. Here is a quote:
"Overall I'm very impressed - write your entry in Writer, adding links, formatting etc as you would with any document, and then click Send to blog and off your post goes to your chosen blog.
...
I think it will be best used by the managers, secretaries and other people who use Writer all day, but perhaps aren't used to using a blog. For them, writing in Writer is natural, blogging is confusing, and a quick way to send their thoughts to their blog is required. For them, the WebLog Publisher should help to encourage blogging by those influential people."

The Register, Groklaw and CBR about the Microsoft news
"Pointing out these bits and pieces, however, misses the most obvious problem Microsoft faces. Close partners such as IBM and HP - companies with more than ample patent portfolios - would not sit idly by as Microsoft tried to derail their lucrative Linux server businesses."
Full article at the Register.

"To actually sue, Microsoft has to sue its own customers. Microsoft itself has told us that its customers mostly use Linux too in a mixed environment. I believe SCO can provide them a useful example of how well it works out when you sue your own customers. I just can't believe Microsoft would do it."
Posted on Groklaw.

"The company's reluctance to detail its claims is reminiscent of the position taken by SCO Group in its copyright infringement claims against Linux. SCO's reluctance to detail its evidence eventually led to it being heavily criticized by Magistrate Judge Brooke Wells in June 2006.
"Certainly if an individual was stopped and accused of shoplifting after walking out of Neiman Marcus they would expect to be eventually told what they allegedly stole," she wrote. "It would be absurd for an officer to tell the accused that 'you know what you stole I'm not telling'. Or to simply hand the accused individual a catalog of Neiman Marcus' entire inventory and say 'it's in there somewhere, you figure it out'."
While Wells was referring to SCO's failure to detail its evidence that IBM breached a contract by transferring its own Unix code to Linux, it was appropriate given the company's already abandoned claims that IBM misappropriated its trade secrets by transferring SCO's Unix code to Linux."

"OpenOffice.org Calc functions, part 1: Understanding functions"
Bruce Byfield just published a new article. Here is his summary:
"A function is a pre-defined calculation entered in a cell to help you analyze or manipulate data in a spreadsheet. All you have to do is add the arguments, and the calculation is automatically made for you. Beginners might be content to use Calc for lists, but, for advanced users, functions are the main reason for spreadsheets. If you understand functions, then you can start to use the real power of a spreadsheet. In Part 1 of this article, I'll give a brief overview of functions and how they operate. Then, in Part 2, I'll talk about how to work with them, and give some examples of what they can do."

Microsoft does not rule out native ODF support for Office!?
I just found the following:

"Microsoft Australia's new platform strategy manager, Sarah Bond, said there is a place for standards as it drives competition and "it drives that desire to be more innovative".
...
Bond said while she is not aware of any initiative within Microsoft to provide native ODF support in Office, she did not rule out the possibility if the market demand was there."

I guess the ISO contradictions are a good indicator that there is real market demand for native ODF support in Office!
