Mozilla security issues fixed in less time
"IE, however, still had a higher proportion of serious vulnerabilities, with nine of the 13 flaws rated as highly severe. By comparison, 11 of the 21 Mozilla browser flaws were deemed highly severe, and just seven of Firefox flaws were seen as highly severe. The IE flaws also took longer to fix -- an average of 43 days, compared to 26 days for Mozilla browsers."

"Firefox pushes IE market share below 90%"
"Web monitoring company Net Applications said Firefox, developed by the Mozilla Foundation, took 6.17% of the market in February compared with 5.59% in January. Mozilla said Firefox had been downloaded 27 million times since its launch at the end of last year. Net Applications gave Internet Explorer 89.04% of the market, compared with 90.31% last December. "Repair tools for Word files do not help much"

Here is now an English version of the German article that I mentioned a few days ago:
"However, it sometimes pays to open the defective Word file with OpenOffice, which is free. While its import filter does not work perfectly, OpenOffice is able to open quite a number of documents that cause Word to crash every time. The commercial software StarOffice produces similar effects."

Just switch! - Mozilla plugin in StarOffice 8
If you always wanted to view StarOffice documents within Mozilla, now you can. StarOffice 8 comes with a browser plugin for Mozilla. You first have to check if during the StarOffice 8 installation the plugin got correctly installed in the Mozilla (or Firefox) plugin directory. On Windows for example, there should be a file "npsoplugin.dll" in the directory "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins". If you can't find the file there, you can still copy it from the StarOffice 8 "program" directory.

In addition, you have to check if the following option ("Tools - Options ...") has been enabled in StarOffice 8:

If that's the case, it should be no problem to load StarOffice documents from your web browser.

"Seeds of open source Ingres continue to grow"
"The OpenOffice suite is another great solution where we see the commoditization process, and gradually we will see that process spill out more and more into core technologies. With Ingres and databases, what we are seeing is a marketplace that couldn't be approached with open source database performance. MySQL, for example, did not have enterprise capabilities."

Just switch! - Naming Cells in StarOffice 8
With StarOffice 8 it is very easy to assign names to spreadsheet fields, so that the field names can be used in formulas. In my simple example here I just want to use the constant pi. Thus, I type in some digits of pi and add the simplest possible formula to a different cell, i.e. "=PI".

After hitting the ENTER key StarOffice Calc cannot resolve the constant PI and thus shows an error.

Now we have to select the field with the pi constant again and place the cursor in the Name Box above the current sheet.

This is the "Name Box":

In the box we just type "PI" and hit Enter. Now the simple fomula can be resolved and the value for pi appears.

Fun Stuff
As you know from my latest blog entries, I like creative stuff, especially when it's funny. Last year I bought the book "lovemarks" which is written by the CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi. I liked the book a lot and therefore I had to check out their website. Here you can find some of their work. Most of it I think is pretty cool!
