Mozilla's Mitchell Baker at the Time Magazine Dinner
"As we got to the dinner table I found myself standing between two people from the Time 100 group of 2004. One woman, from the investment world, looked a bit unsure as I described Mozilla and Firefox. But she had brought her son as her guest and he immediately piped up "Firefox! Everyone I know uses Firefox!" And went on to describe why. I then turned to person on my other side, who is active in politics. He too looked a little lost of the idea of software. But his companion, a doctoratal student in the biosciences looked up and said "Firefox! I absolutely use Firefox. All my colleagues use Firefox." And he went on to explain why as well."

"Open Office, IBM, and Sun: Worlds Apart, or Just Miles?"
"Q: So you're against Sun and OO.o too?
A: No. Again, as a daily user of the application I understand perfectly where they're coming from. And while I support IBM's right to operate as they have, I don't think it's in the best interests of either IBM or OO.o. In short, I support IBM's right to choose in this situation, but that does not mean that I have to like the choice that they've made."

Just switch! - Beefing up presentations with clipart graphics
If you are looking at ways to beef up your StarOffice presentations, there are quite a few options. The simplest one is to just take a look at the "Gallery". The Gallery tool is called by clicking on the following toolbar button:

The StarOffice gallery includes about 1,800 clipart graphics and photos for different topics and themes. Here is a little snapshot:

Another great source for clipart graphics is www.openclipart.org:

Unfortunately, StarOffice and OpenOffice.org do not support the SVG format, yet. Thus, some conversion work is needed to integrate the OpenClipart graphics into the Gallery. To people who are willing to pay for high quality photos I personally can recommend Photos.com:

I really like their pictures. Unfortunately Photos.com is pretty expensive if you only need a high-quality photo once in a while. What clipart and photo resources do you use?

"Putting the spin on IBM" (about IBM and OpenOffice.org)
I just read this article.

I would have to ask Louis and Simon, but I guess it is just coincidence that they both mentioned IBM. IBM might be an interesting case since most people (including me) still don't know what exactly IBM is doing with OpenOffice.org in their Workplace offering. Here IBM apparently admits that they actually forked OpenOffice.org in order to implement Workplace:

"Technically, no. They were derived from the OpenOffice project, but we forked away from that over a year ago. We componentized them and tried to slim them down a bit, and we also added a whole bunch of fixes and features and cleaned them up.

We will not advertise these as editors; we will be clear that they are OpenOffice-derived and they will support OpenOffice formats, and we encourage people to use OASIS and OpenOffice doc formats in addition to Office ones."

To me, forking is not really supporting an open source project, but other open source supporters might have different opinions about that. The good thing is that IBM now at least officially supports the OASIS OpenDocument standard.

BTW, as you can see here, it is not all the uncommon to ask for a Joint Copyright Agreement (JCA). Novell does the same for Evolution.
