"Enterprise Unix Roundup: Open Source, Redefined"
"Enterprises generally adopt technology based on technological strengths and costs, and, occasionally, ideology. Here, Windows often comes up short. With the corporatization of Linux and open source in general, the ideology part of the argument is splitting. Only the proprietary software vendors stand to benefit, and Red Hat, without the Linux idealism and surrounding buzz, becomes just another competitor to Microsoft and Sun."

"MIP Holdings moves most users to open source" (including OpenOffice.org)
"The days of seeing a browser or a word processor as a unique application that provided some advantage to business are long gone," says Richard Firth, CEO of MIP Holdings.

"Today, at least 95% of all work done using what we know as productivity tools is common across all organisations. Why then do employees need specialised, expensive tools to do these tasks when their functionality has become a commodity?"

"OpenSolaris Community Picks Board, Gets to Work"
"The luminary that the OpenSolaris community brought in is not, as some had suggested, Sun founder and open source BSD Unix creator Bill Joy (which might have been a little too close to Sun, on second thought), but an equally excellent choice: Roy Fielding.

Fielding was one of the founders of the World Wide Web project in 1993. He was also the primary architect of the HTTP 1.0 protocol that is the basis for Web serving and surfing, one of the co-founders of the open source Apache HTTP Web server project and the past chairman of the Apache Foundation, which governed that open source project."

They also show how to extend the capabilities of the graphical desktop and offer tips for those who prefer to do most of their work at the text-mode console."
