"Kernel Changes Draw Concern from Open-Source Community" "Sam Greenblatt, a senior vice president at Computer Associates International Inc., in Islandia, N.Y., said that while the kernel is evolving for the desktop, server and embedded markets, more and more technology is being included, and the kernel is "getting fatter. We are not interested in the game drivers and music drivers that are being added to the kernel. We are interested in a more stable kernel."
Morton, who works for Open Source Development Labs Inc., in Beaverton, Ore., said there is no formal road map for an enterprise Linux feature set since the development of those technologies rests largely with vendors such as Red Hat Inc., IBM, Novell Inc. and CA."

"Firefox users can get unofficial Google add-ons" "Q:I installed Mozilla Firefox on my home computer and tried it out for a few weeks. I was very disappointed in the results. It won't accept the Google toolbar. It won't load or connect to the ActiveX software downloaded and installed on my computer. I'm back to using Explorer, with all of its security risks.
A:For nearly a year, experts have been recommending that Internet users switch to a browser other than Microsoft Internet Explorer. This advice followed a June 2004 warning from US-CERT, the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team, that pointed out a security vulnerability in Internet Explorer and urged computer users to minimize risks by using another browser, especially when viewing untrusted Web sites and HTML-based e-mails.
Many users subsequently have chosen to switch to the free Mozilla Firefox browser. Firefox does not support VBScript or ActiveX technologies, which hackers often use to attack computers, and the browser also does not allow spyware and adware to automatically install while users simply view Web sites, according to Mozilla."

"Solaris runs Linux applications easily" "You can safely run Solaris and Linux applications side by side in the same container, or you can configure separate containers that isolate Solaris and Linux applications from each other and from system faults.
If an application fault occurs and the application needs to be restarted, other applications continue to run without interruption. Unlike technology previously available for running Linux in other non-Linux environments, Project Janus functionality is kernel-integrated and supported as an operating system feature."
