Just switch! - What would you like to know about StarOffice?
According to some feedback that I received from non-Sun email accounts, it looks like some people are actually reading my stuff and are finding it useful. Thanks a lot for the input!

I still have quite a few ideas what I can write about here in my blog, but I'd like to hear your ideas, too. Just comment on this blog entry and let me know what comes to your mind!

"Call for implementations: UBL input specifications"
"What does this mean? If you are in a position to do some forms work, be it XForms, classic HTML forms, PDF, InfoPath, OpenOffice, XML Spy, OpenLaszlo, Flex, Backbase, LiquidOffice, Microsoft Word, whatever, have a look at the spec itself, currently in wiki format."

"First, don't worry; you won't have much trouble adjusting to OpenOffice.org Writer. The interface isn't terribly different; the menu and toolbar layout are similar to Word's."

"OpenOffice ... thousands of desktops"
"The Maharashtra government of India is increasingly opts for open-source software over licenced ones provided by technology giants like Microsoft.

In the past few months, OpenOffice, a free downloadable package of commonly-used applications like spreadsheets, word processing and email, has become the official choice for thousands of desktops across the state, and is expected to save the exchequer about Rs 90 crore in licence fees."

Just switch! - Powerful Forms without Programming
Today I want to show you a little "trick" that allows to create flexible and powerful forms without programming. As you can imagine I'm talking about the cool XForms functionality again.

In order to enable or disable one entry field based on the state of a checkbox, one only has to set the "relevance condition". In my little example here I created a checkbox with the binding "MayContactMe" ...

... and I created a text box for the email address with the binding "EmailAddress". In order to create the dependency between the two fields I only have to set the relevance condition by clicking on the "..." button next to "Relevant" and enter "boolean-from-string( ../MayContactMe )":

If you don't run into a StarOffice 8 beta bug, the condition should access the MayContactMe information within the "Model 1" instance and turn the value into a real boolean value. Now, the email address text box should be activated or deactivated based on the state of the check box.

"Mozilla Foundation Opens Temporary Netscape DevEdge Mirror"
"Deb Richardson has announced that a temporary mirror of the old Netscape DevEdge developer content is now online. For many years, DevEdge was a valuable source of Web developer documentation but it was abruptly shut down by America Online in late 2004. After negotiations, AOL gave the Mozilla Foundation a license to use the old DevEdge content. The new Mozilla Foundation mirror of DevEdge can be found at devedge-temp.mozilla.org (start at index_en.html)."

"Skepticism of Microsoft-Sponsored Study Applauded"
"If you feel inclined to pay for something, put it directly into support, donate it - or offer a code bounty on a feature you'd like. Can you imagine Microsoft's reaction if you offered them five grand to add PDF exporting to MS Word by June? Yet some businesses save ten times that, each, on that one feature alone when they elect to use OpenOffice.org in place of or alongside Microsoft Office."
