"Tamil OpenOffice.org demonstrated to the Hon. President of India"
I found this on the OpenOffice.org marketing list:
"Another first for OpenOffice.org. Following the Tamil Software launch, the team involved in production of the CD (me included) met the Hon. President Dr. A P J Abdulkalam yesterday."

Just switch! - My very personal highlight in the StarOffice 8 office suite
As you most likely will have noticed, I like collecting quotes from online magazines. For example, I'm involved in two newsletters, an internal one and the OpenOffice.org Newsletter. I started the latest "flavor" of the OpenOffice.org Newsletter about two years ago, but today one volunteer from the OpenOffice.org community is doing most of the hard work. Deepankar Datta digs out all the news about OpenOffice.org and posts them to the marketing project's newsletter mailing list. You rock, Deepankar!

Today I discovered a new feature in StarOffice 8 which I desperately have been waiting for. In StarOffice 8 it is possible to call the "Paste Special" feature via a simple shortcut. Just in case, you don't know what the "Paste Special" feature is useful for, here is a screen shot of a document into which I imported the content of an HTML web page:

Since for my purposes I don't want to take over the original formatting, I choose the "Paste Special" feature. In StarOffice 8 it now can be called via "SHIFT + CTRL + V", which brings up the following dialog:

The "Paste Special" feature allows inserting just the content:

Nevertheless, the "Paste Special" feature is still available via the menu:

Although this shortcut is a very simple change, it improves my productivity a lot. Therefore, it's my very personal highlight in StarOffice 8.

"IDABC: Toward a digitally interoperable Europe"
"NewsForge: The file format of the latest versions of Microsoft Office competes directly with the OpenDocument standard specified by OASIS. OpenDocument will be the default file format in the 2.0 release of OpenOffice.org. What is the IDABC position on these office document formats?

Schnittger: IDABC supports the idea of open document formats to be used for exchange between administrations and between administrations and their customers."

"AMD picks away at Intel's lead in Q1"
"AMD shipped 16.9 percent of x86 processors in the quarter, up from 15 percent market share last year. The remainder of the x86 market is fulfilled by companies such as Transmeta and Via Technologies, which combined typically account for less than 2 percent of the market."

Java and OpenOffice.org
"We understand that there have been questions regarding the use of the Java language in OpenOffice.org. OpenOffice.org uses Java only in some areas; the rest of the code is in C++. The use of Java has allowed OpenOffice.org to rapidly gain needed functionality, and OpenOffice.org can now run in different Java environments. Following great work by the community, the choice of Java environments to support that functionality is expanding. The GNU Compiler for Java (GCJ) project, whose goal is to create an open Java compiler, promises a Free java environment. OpenOffice.org is working closely with the GCJ project to fix issues and extend functionality in both codebases to ensure that users everywhere benefit from Free Software."

Genealogical Program with OpenOffice.org Support
"GRAMPS is a GNOME genealogy program that allows you to easily build and keep track of your family tree. Whether you are new to genealogy or an experienced genealogist, GRAMPS should be able to meet your needs. Supporting databases of up to about 100000 people, GRAMPS can handle most family trees.

GRAMPS is capable of importing data from and exporting data to other genealogy programs using the GEDCOM interchange format. Reports can be generated in OpenOffice.org, HTML, PDF, AbiWord, Kword, RTF, LaTeX, and PostScript formats. All data is stored in Berkeley database, with backwards compatibile imports and exportts for the XML format used by the 1.0.x series. GRAMPS can be extended using a plugin system, supporting plugins written in the Python language."

"Brazil Extends Microsoft Challenge"
"Brazil encouraged other developing countries to follow its lead in replacing Microsoft Corp. software with free alternatives, such as Linux.

ITI estimates Brazil's federal government spends about 300 million reais ($121.3 million) a year in software licensing fees, out of a total 2.8 billion reais spent on information technology. The government saved 28.5 million reais since Dirceu issued the recommendation to use the Linux operating system and OpenOffice.org from Sun Microsystems Inc., the agency said."
