Just switch! - StarOffice 8 Migration Tools The following screenshot (PNG format) shows a screenshot of a results file generated by the migration assessment tool that ships with the Enterprise Edition of StarOffice 8:
As you can see, the migration tool allows to collect and analyze data about existing Microsoft Office documents. The tool for example provides data about the age of the various documents, and thus helps to decide which documents are still relevant.
The report also includes detailed data about potential migration issues down to the individual file level. Thus, the tool really helps to get a better understanding of the migration efforts and costs upfront. The Enterprise Edition of StarOffice 8 also includes a first version of a macro migration tool, which I will talk about sometime in the future. More details can be found here.

From the OASIS Adoption Forum in London From the OASIS Adoption Forum in London:
"Barbara Held from the eGovernment services division (IDABC) of the European Commission, said it can only recommend the open file format to member states if it is issued by a public standardisation body, such as ISO.
"Only specifications that are issued by public standardisation bodies are considered standards by the European Commission. So, from the perspective of the European Commission, OASIS' OpenDocument format is not a standard," said Held, in a speech at the OASIS event.
She said that IDABC will start recommending OpenDocument if it is approved as an ISO standard, as it already fulfils its criteria on open standards."

Is Corel living on a different planet? I just read this interview with two Corel employees. Is Corel living on a different planet? Or is Corel just ignoring the world beyond the US?
What about the millions of OpenOffice.org CD's that got distributed in India (read this and this), Lenovo bundling StarOffice, Bristol City Council deploying StarOffice, or the French Gendarmerie using OpenOffice.org?
If you just look at the number of pages that Google finds for each of the office suites, OpenOffice.org is also the clear winner (see this). I also doubt that WordPerfect is available in as many languages as OpenOffice.org (check this out). According to this Yankee Group quote OpenOffice.org and StarOffice have at least 19% in the small and medium business area. Thus, I have no idea where Corel's market share claims come from.
Regarding OpenDocument I'm pretty sure that it will pick up quickly, since not just Sun, but also large companies like IBM and Novell are behind it. The recommendations by the European Commission and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts definitely help. Just look at the OASIS OpenDocument technical committee member list as well as the list of sponsors of this year's OpenOffice.org Conference. Finally, notice that AbiWord's OpenDocument support has been contributed by INdT, Nokia's Technology Institute. Therefore, I see a bright future for the OASIS OpenDocument format, OpenOffice.org, and StarOffice!
