Forbes: "Microsoft Faces Tech Challenges"
"This is clearly evident in the success of Google and Yahoo!, eBay and Amazon.com, salesforce.com, Red Hat, MySQL and OpenOffice.org (open-source models)," he said. "Reading the tea leaves, it would appear that Microsoft is again under assault by changing technology and as with Netscape, off to a slower start than others (Google, enough said)."

"Corel, Novell Reaffirm Commitment to OpenDocument"
"What is likely to become an issue for Microsoft is its definition of "open," said Ian Campbell, CEO and president of Nucleus Research. "Microsoft's 'openness' still has some proprietary aspects to it. It's possible that they might have to make changes to support OpenDocument, to fall in line with the rest of the industry."

Aside from whether Microsoft will actually leap onto the OpenDocument train, the emphasis on ODF by Corel and Novell bolsters Massachusetts' decision, Campbell believes.

"It makes it easier for the state to justify going in that direction, and gives more weight to their argument," he said. "It may also make it easier for others to follow their lead.""

"InfoWeek: OpenDocument tangled in MA political showdown"
"However, whereas such political avenues with US-based governments are routinely available to influential companies with domestic interests, the same cannot be said for American companies looking to influence decisions beyond US borders. According to a recent report by IDG's News Service, the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) recently urged African Nations to embrace open source. NEPAD is backed by multiple African nations and is responsible for coming up with an economic framework that, amongst other goals, is designed to "halt the marginalization of Africa in the globalization process." Should the African countries that embrace NEPAD's vision heed the organization's advice, the result could be far more devastating to Microsoft than the outcome of any single state's decision in the US."

Corel confirms OpenDocument commitment. Novell's "in" too.
"Suffice to say, Corel remains committed to working alongside OASIS and other technology vendors to ensure the continued evolution of the ODF standard and the adoption of open standards industry-wide.

In other news, again by way of Gary Edwards, Novell has apparently climbed aboard the OpenDocument Format train as well. Although Novell's representatives participated in the deliberations that led to Massachusetts' standardization on the ODF, today is the first day that a Novell representative is being listed as a member of the technical committee at the OASIS consortium that's responsible for the standard.
