Does a truly open standard limit choice? I just read this article. According to the article, Microsoft claims that IBM is trying to stop Microsoft's format from being adopted as a standard in order "to limit choice and force their single standard on consumers".
I as a consumer don't see how having one truly open standard limits choice? I'm quite happy about having just one HTML format, just one SQL standard and just one Java Enterprise Edition spec. If I as a consumer or developer stick to the standard, data can be used by and exchanged between multiple different applications from multiple different vendors.
I doubt that the Internet would have been as successful as it is, if there had been many different standards for web page content. Thus, I don't believe that having just one truly open standard limits choice and is negative for the consumers.
