$175,000 for OpenOffice.org and ODF Innovations
OpenOffice.org just announced the participation rules for the "OpenOffice.org Community Innovation Program" which belongs to Sun's community awards program. The total prize money dedicated to OpenOffice.org sums up to $175,000. I'm curious to see what ideas people come up with. Since I'm co-charing the OASIS ODF Adoption TC, I personally would love to see proposals leveraging ODF and XForms. J. David Eisenberg's documents might be useful for starters. I could also imagine cool things by leveraging the ImageMagick tools. But I guess, just by looking at submitted issues and RFE's, people will be able to come up with many new cool ideas.

French Gendarmerie Adopts Ubuntu
I just read this article about the French Gendarmerie adopting Ubuntu. Here is a short extract:

"The gendarmerie's 70,000 desktops currently use Microsoft's Windows XP operating system. But these will progressively change over to the Linux system distributed by Ubuntu, explained Colonel Nicolas Geraud, deputy director of the gendarmerie's IT department.

"We will introduce Linux every time we have to replace a desktop computer," he said, "so this year we expect to change 5,000-8,000 to Ubuntu and then 12,000-15,000 over the next four years so that every desktop uses the Linux operating system by 2013-2014."

There are three reasons behind the move, Geraud said at the Solution Linux 2008 conference here. The first is to diversify suppliers and reduce the force's reliance on one company, the second is to give the gendarmerie mastery of the operating system and the third is cost, he said."

I feel a bit like the French Gendarmerie because due to my consequent use of open standards and open source multi-platform applications, I can easily switch between platforms without any issues. I just got a MacBook Pro so that I can test and promote the upcoming Mac version of OpenOffice.org. Moving from my Solaris laptop to the MacBook Pro was easy because all my key applications like OpenOffice.org, Firefox, Thunderbird, Lightning, and GAIM/Adium are available for both platforms. Thus, I was immediately productive again. However, I definitely stay away from proprietary tools (from Apple or any other vendor) because I don't want to be locked in again. Anyway, so far my experiences with Mac OS X have been much more pleasant and fun than my past Windows XP experiences.
