Just switch! - Simple Add-on Management in StarOffice 8
Since the question came up on an OpenOffice.org mailing list I thought it would be good to mention the new package management tool in StarOffice 8. In the past there was only a command line tool called "pkgchk". The pkgchk tool still exists, but it is depreciated. The replacement for the pkgchk command line tool going forward will be the "unopkg" tool. The unopkg tool can be used in two ways, as a regular command line tool and as a GUI tool. "unopkg gui" brings up the same gui that can also be called from within StarOffice 8:

This is what the graphical front end looks like:

Today I will just deploy one of the sample add-on components that are part of the StarOffice 8 SDK:

The status bar shows the progress of the deployment ...

...

Once the add-on component has been deployed successfully it shows up in the list:

After opening a new document the new add-on component is listed in the menu bar ...

... and brings up this little dialog when it is called.

This screenshot shows the menu structure of another add-on that I have deployed on my machine:

As you can see (or at least imagine from the screenshot) it is possible to build pretty powerful add-on components for StarOffice.
