OpenOffice (and the StarOffice version I use because it's easier to install on Linspire Linux) seems to have no clue about typography and how to format documents conveniently and in terms familiar in the publishing world. For example, the "styles" list is monumentally obscure. If the writer happens to remove all examples of a style, it disappears from the list and is lost--no way to restore a that paragraph to the previous format without recreating it. There seem to be no easily applied sets of formats that remain consistent across documents. The formatting information relating to a paragraph doesn't seem to be located anywhere in particular; c.f., WORD for DOS ver 5.1 in which the paragraph mark contained all the formats for the paragraph, and was (still is :-) an entity that can be cut and pasted to create new paragraphs with the same format--really handy. Working in *Office, I find that a deletion intended to simply close up a space can explode in unexpected format changes--very unhandy. Does the *Office coding team accept input from users? I've not found that page on Sun's site or at openoffice.org. Would appreciate a URL.
