Monday December 24, 2007 Early Bird Kit Update on OpenJDK 6
Hofstadter's law has struck again and the previous plans for an OpenJDK 6 code drop by the end of 2007 will be delayed. (The backward branch of OpenJDK 6 has had good growth, but the engineering for it was not far enough along at the time of Mercurial transition in JDK 7 to serve as a retcon progenitor, so the eventual repositories for OpenJDK 6 and 7 will not be related in a Mercurial sense.)
I've submitted a project proposal for OpenJDK 6 and will give further updates in early 2008. Happy holidays!

Is there any intention to encourage outside involvement (i.e. non-Sun) in providing OpenJDK 1.6? While the whole OpenJDK project has been great news for those in the Free Java community, it's still very much just source code and no community. I think the JDK 6 backport would be a great way to get people involved, as I'm guessing it would have a low entry requirement. I suppose what I'm envisaging is a Mercurial repository for it with automated regular build runs against the JDK6 TCK, giving a clear target to achieve. At the moment, the development process coupled with the ongoing presence of the binary blobs means that, sadly, we're still not in that different a situation than we were before.
