Open Source Java - Crossing the Rubicon

At this point I should probably employ a pithy turn of phrase or draw a clever analogy between Sun's announcement of open source Java and some interesting historical event. But if you've read this far I'll spare you that pain. There are considerable high-level implications to Sun's actions, but those are well-covered elsewhere so I'll stick to local prognostication. The HotSpot sources are now accessible through an easy-to-view opengrok instance, similar in spirit to that used by Open Solaris. And of course there's svn access or zipballs too. Bloggers will able to annotate their blogs with pointers into the source, providing a much richer narrative and enabling better engagement with the larger community. My personal hope is that the HotSpot JVM will be more appealing to academic and research environments. I look forward to those collaborations.
Alea Iacta Est.

Comments:

David, Firstly, congrats to the hotspot team for the phenomenal effort (and for being part of a historical event)! Coming to the sources, I didn't see a link to opengrok on the hotspot page. Is it setup yet? Am I missing something?

Hello Bahath - If you go to https://openjdk.dev.java.net/hotspot/ and then click on "Browsable Sources" you'll be taken to the opengrok instance that hosts the hotspot source code. A different instance hosts opensolaris. If you're interested in opengrok itself you can grab it from http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/opengrok/

I'm afraid the URL mentioned isn't an OpenGrok instance. It doesn't allow for code search atleast. Is it setup yet?

It will be more appealing, certainly. Especially if you're working on something that requires real-world tests with real users, and feedback from these users.
