Visa payWave

Much of the London Underground is plastered with advertisements for this new card, right now; it has various taglines, the one which particularly springs to my mind being "in the future, nobody queues".

Am I the only one thinking it needs a new one, along the lines of "in the future, all transactions are 'cardholder not present', as nobody authenticates"?

Definitely. I think we should get a batch of stickers made up so we can add one to every poster we can reach. Please note: I am not advocating illegal or dangerous behaviour. This recommendation void where prohibited by law.

In Japan there is extensive use of RFID cards (Suica, PASMO, etc.) for metro fare payment and some micro-payments, and I saw a wide range of anti-skimming products for sale (presumably 'Faraday shields' in some for or other).

Will we learn from their experience, or re-learn at our own cost? ('Those who refuse to learn from history are condemned to repeat it')...

PS - another irony, from the Dept of Unintended Consequences: since the introduction of chip & PIN to 'improve the security of PoS payments in the UK', it is far easier for a cardholder to give their card to someone else to use on their behalf... because the authentication is 'something you know' (PIN) rather than 'something you are' (signature biometric).

I was in the queue behind someone at a car rental desk when the card she offered for the deposit payment was declined. "Oh yes", she said, "I forgot... that's the card I gave to my son yesterday to go and do the shopping with - so that account won't have enough in it".
