No iPhone SDK, but ...

Monday Mar 03, 2008

For all of you that were waiting for Apple to release the promised iPhone SDK last week (well, they did promise to release an iPhone SDK in February!) and were disappointed, we here in Project Sun SPOT are doing our darndest to pick up the slack.

What have we done? well, we released the Beta of our own Software-only SDK on Friday for starters. So there's an SDK to take the place of the missing iPhone SDK (ok, so it won't do anything to help you build an iPhone application, but you can have way more fun with a Sun SPOT anyway since it won't interrupt you by ringing all the time).

Then on Saturday (yeah, we work around-the-clock!) we released 6 (yes six!!!) additional board designs for add-on boards via open source. You can read all about it in this installment from Roger . You can now get everything you need (other than the money and the parts!) to build any of these six boards:

  1. eDemoBoard -- this is the one that comes with your Sun SPOT kit
  2. eFlash -- this has two card slots for MiniSD cards. Go ahead, put 8Gigs on your Sun SPOT!
  3. eSerial -- Get more RS232 from your Sun SPOT
  4. eProto -- Put pretty much whatever you want on it!
  5. eProtoMega -- no, not Mega Bigger, just Mega Better! Same as the eProto, but with the addition of another Atmega88 processor
  6. eUSBHost -- for all of you that keep asking if we can do USB Host, well, now you can almost do it. Build one of these, and write the required USB Host Drivers for Sun SPOT, and away you go!

These are all stackable boards, which means that you can sandwich them between the SPOT Main Board and the existing eDemo Board for additional functionality.

And before you flood me with email asking if you can just buy these from us, the answer is, sadly, no. We are releasing everything you need to build these yourself, or have them built, including schematics, layout, and bill of materials.

So, who needs that iPhone SDK anyway? We give you open-source hardware and open-source software.
