People who love sausages and software should never watch either being made

Is this Jonathan's playbook?

The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday reviewed what sounds like a seminal new book: Invisible Engines: How Software Platforms Drive Innovation and Transform Industriesby David S. Evans, Andrei Hagiu and Richard Schmalensee, from MIT Press. Its thesis is simple: platforms matter, and getting developers to adopt your platform is the key to success, not only for the platform builder, but also for all the smaller players that build applications that run on that platform. Sound familiar? The authors define platforms broadly, to include not only Windows, but also the PlayStation, the iPod, and the Palm Treo. It's nice to see our Solaris strategy being validated by academa. My two cents: it's time for Sun to cut a deal with Dell to OEM Solaris.
