On the 30-31, Oct, 2008, the 7th NEA OSS Promotion Forum held in Wuxi, China. The project is initiated from 2004, with a cooperation plan signed by DG of IT from the three countries. The project then was hosted by China/Japan/Korea OSS promotion Forum to follow up in detail. The forum intends to promote Open Source Software in the northeast Asia area.

The website of NEAOSS is http://www.neaossforum.org/menu01_1.php .

The whole project separated into 3 programs:

(1)Technology and development:

- OpenDRIM Project: Develop resource management technology using standards based Linux system
- Crackerjack Project: Develop the tools to test interoperability between different versions of Linux kernel
- Security Project: Develop security modules and Develop modules to manage and control SELinux

(2)Human Resource Development:

- Develop a curriculum for CJK open source HR development model
- Select from each country two outstanding contributors for the development of open source software (Separate from the recipients of Open Source Contest)
- Hold the Open Source Contest
- Select & display open source textbooks

(3) Standardization and Certification Study

NEAOSS forum formed “WG3: Standardization and Certification Study” in order to study Open Source Software standardization and certification in July 2004.

NEAOSS Forum WG3 formed subsidiary group SWG2 in June 2006 to accelerate promotion of OSS, to enhance Web interoperability between an existing proprietary browser, which currently has large market share, and OSS web browsers.

In the WG3 conference, two documents, Solution of Web Interoperability Discrepancy(WG3 TR000004 ), which is based on the previous Web Interoperability Discrepancy Study (WG3 TR00003), and Recommendation on IM Engine Service Provider Interface(WG3 WR00001 ) discussed.

The Web Interoperability Discrepancy Study compare Firefox, Netscape and IE in the process of implementing HTML related standards, and present some discrepancies. In the research on the Solution of Web Interoperability Discrepancy, it gives suggestion for developers about how to deal with the discrepancies, in order for the webpage developed to be compliant every all kinds of browser. Actually, it is pretty practical way to do, since there is no compliance and certification program in the standardization arena.

The project is good to be leveraged in the whole stack of open source, not limited in Linux.

The next meeting will be in Beijing. 2009.2.19
