"E-mails hurt IQ more than pot"

Friday Apr 29, 2005

I saw the title of this article and just had to look. What this article does not mention is how the people surveyed are checking email. Many of my colleagues now carry Treos. Web (email and instant messaging), phone, camera, and more. Who wouldn't want one? Um, me... for right now at least. My theory is that I spend enough time in front of a computer. It is so key to manage the large amount of information being thrown at us on a daily basis. You have to "weed" out the good and the bad to be effective. I want to continue being effective at managing information... and I just don't see myself doing that when I'm at a red sox game, beer in hand, trying to balance the treo in the other.

Woodpecker

Thursday Apr 28, 2005

I have a new neighbor. He doesn't pay taxes or even own property.

Before I get to that, I must say that I love animals. I'm the idiot who watches that rescue show on animal planet and gets really upset with how cruel people are to animals. But back to my little problem.

The new neighbor is actually a woodpecker in my woods. I'm a light sleeper and this thing's pecking is starting to make me mad. (Mad as in crazy, like my UK coworkers say.) I did some searching on woodpeckers and was surprised to see how many different kinds there are. I couldn't figure out what type is pecking away in the early morning hours in my woods. I did learn that the red-cockaded woodpecker is on the US endangered species list. That bird lives in the Southeast US and I live in the Northeast US. PHEW! Why am I relieved? "Migration: This type of woodpecker does not migrate."

Bono bunks with Gates

Wednesday Apr 27, 2005

I found this article interesting but wasn't sure if I should post it. On one side, it talks about M$ft. Since Sun and M$ft kissed and made up, I can post this, right? Plus, we're already friends with Bono.

When in Seattle, Bono bunks with Bill Gates

I like how Gates says he wouldn't buy one of the U2 edition iPods. Mmmm...I wonder if Mary offered her house to Bono when she met him.

Where is the %^#@ term I searched for?

Wednesday Apr 27, 2005

Ever do a search and then spend way too much time clicking on results & looking for the word you just searched for? The search team feels your pain.

Check out new highlight-your-search-term-in-the-document functionality on the sun.com search. Do a search. Click on the icon to the right of the result title.

Highlight your search term

This will allow you to open the result in a new window with the word you searched for highlighted. Hmm. Maybe Solaris 10 isn't the best example (even though you do get to see the cool logo in the results) since it's a widely used term and easy to find on pages. Search for something like "project rave." Search for your own name (you never know what that will result in). Heck, search for "foo." A random fact: We get a whole lotta people who enter "foo" in the search box... and it's not the great folks testing search cause I've asked. We also get a lot of other odd searches that are pretty funny. I'll have to blog about those later.

Another thing - if you try out the highlighter, please take a sec to provide some feedback. There are feedback links at the bottom and in the right nav of the search pages. And if you want us to change the page to hot pink, we will certainly consider it. Maybe. Maybe not. ;-)

Don't buy this tshirt

Monday Apr 25, 2005

While this tshirt may seem like a good gift, I don't recommend you buy it for your loved ones. My parents bought it as a gift for that guy I live with (aka my husband) thinking it would be a funny way to thank him for the bottomless tech support he provides to my ever-so-needy-but-I-still-love-them-family.

He wears it now and then and when I say, "Oh, that's the tshirt my parents bought you," he responds with either:
1. A mumble I can't understand
or
2. Your family's the best (followed by an eye roll)

So why shouldn't you buy the tshirt?

I've found that it reminds my family AND his family of their minor-to-ridiculous PC issues. So they point and laugh at the tshirt and then say something like:
"That computer you built me keeps breaking." (Like the problem roots from what he did instead of the fact that they can't lay off the mp3 downloads or whatever else they are looking at late at night! Wink. Wink.)

Happy Belated Birthday Dad!

Wednesday Apr 13, 2005

This blog entry is dedicated to my Dad. Happy 61st Birthday, Dad. Yes, I know it's a couple days late... and I already wished you a happy birthday on the actual day. I thought a public note via this blog would be a good thing, yes?

Did you get your gift?

Sorry I can't outdo last year's present:

Ken Fenway

For those outside of "Red Sox Nation", that's my Dad's name up on the board at Fenway Park. Ahem, I mean Fenway Pahk. Ok, gotta log off now. Schilling is returning from his injury and is the starting pitcher against the Yankees tonight. Should be a good game.

What is going on here?

Tuesday Apr 12, 2005

It's about time it snowed in Colorado. Back here on the US East coast, we received a ton of snow this season. Every time we got another foot of snow, some innocent person in Colorado would let me know that they had received far less than average this season. My response: Um, yeah, thanks for the reminder. Sigh.

So what is going on here? It finally starts to warm up in the Northeast and I get a cold/flu thing. I mistook my stuffy head for allergies so I didn't start taking my usual standby until it was too late. I'm feeling better (thanks) but am still a sneezing mess. And for all you germ freaks out there, don't worry cause I'm working from home today so I don't spread my germs any further (you're welcome).
