Slashdot had a posting today about a proposed/possible US$100 laptop designed by some folks at MIT.
I think this is interesting, and the device itself looks kinda cool. I wouldn't mind having one of those as my laptop (OK, I'd want the model with a faster processor...
)
But, of course, this is interesting to me not just as an individual, but also as a Sun employee. We have recently rearticulated some of our values and goals, given the current state of the world. We've decided we want close the "digital divide" (Search results on the web demonstrate that we're at least generating some buzz with this). One can see some business sense in this. I also think this concern for the "have nots" is something one finds throughout in the hacker/geek culture, and so it isn't at all odd for Sun to place this so prominently in its corporate identity.
A US$100 certainly would make laptops more accessible by those that need them. My only question (and you certainly must have seen this coming) is: When will this laptop be running OpenSolaris, rather than Linux?
