Office Limbo Land
[Personal Life] / Permalink / 2007-06-20 12:35:10.0 / Comments [4]

I have been kicked out of my home office, that is right, the office that I have held down for the last five years I am being kicked out of. And, my new office is not even ready yet. Okay, so I am being moved out of my top floor, corner, window office to make room for our first child to get her big girl room. My next office will be located in the finished basement... as soon as I get the basement finished so I am sort in office limbo land for now. Last night I finished up the drywall repair in my now ex-office so now we are onto priming and texturing before the final coats of color go up on the walls. Can you guess what the color will be? I will give you one guess for a little girls room, go ahead and guess.

Expanding Family
[Personal Life] / Permalink / 2007-05-29 13:50:04.0 / Comments [8]

For those that have not heard the wonderful news we are expecting our second child in late Novemeber. Praise God for this awesome blessing. At our first doctors visit we were able to hear the heat beat (160 bpm) and it sounded great. Before you ask, we don't plan on finding out if it is a boy or a girl, that would ruin the surprise. More news to come later as we look forward to our growing family.

Fraud, what fraud?
[Personal Life] / Permalink / 2007-05-29 12:57:04.0 /

Well there are the cases of stolen purses and there is fraud protection. Fraud protection kicked in for me this weekend when someone tried to purchase some high end electronics online and then online pharmaceuticals. I am thankful for fraud protection and am in the process of having all card numbers changed... even preemptively on others. Sorta freaking/uneasy feeling that it happened and retracing my steps and places that I have used my credit card.

The Hunt and the Bad Taste
[Personal Life] / Permalink / 2007-05-21 05:27:51.0 /

While enjoying a great weekend in the backyard as a family our little girl was joyfully playing on her new little tikes slide and helping daddy weed out a flower bed. Mommy was watching after our little girl. Daddy (me) was weeding out a few flower beds.

Then there is Nuba. First she was on the hunt for the rabbit that has been scampering around in out backyard... she was able to chase it into the bushes that cover the fence line and then stayed on point for a while since she did not see it take off further down the fence and into the other yard. Later in the weekend she was able to chase it around a bit more, soon the rabbit is going to get the hit or just keep up the game of chase. While I was cleaning out a window well by a flower bed I came across a toad... that's right a toad and labrador's curiosity. The curiosity did get the best of Nuba and she decided to try to lick/bite at it and ended up extremely salivating and spitting for the next few minutes. We took a few close up pictures in case we had to show the vet what she got into. So far so good, the next day she had an upset stomach in morning but was fine by the evening. Emily had a great time looking at the toad and watching it jump and then telling us how Nuba tried to get the toad.

It was a great weekend.

Grill Is On
[Personal Life] / Permalink / 2007-05-08 17:26:26.0 / Comments [2]

No fancy JavaOne posts here... I am in MI and they are all having a great time in Cali. So instead I bring you a grill tip, if you are looking for great replacement parts for you grill that is a few years old then head over and check this place out. Our grill is five years old and was showing major signs of wear in the burner and heat plate and was debating on just getting a new one... as with the new "throw away, buy new" generation. But instead I opted to order up some replacement parts since the rest of the grill still work and almost looks brand new. After they arrived yesterday I ripped into the grill to find some very rusty screws that took a little effort to get off. After installing the replacement parts I fired her up and she was heating like a dream again. Now off into the grilling season... while I grill 12 months of the year so off into the summer grilling season.

Remember, boil the bratwursts in beer and the 7 minutes a side. Yummy!!!

ABC Party
[Personal Life] / Permalink / 2007-04-12 09:20:44.0 / Comments [1]

It is hard to believe that it has been two years since Emily was born, wow how the time moves fast. I know that is a statement that almost every parent makes I am sure but it is true. To see how fast she changes, learns, grows... it is a wonder and we feel blessed each day to be her parents and know she is a gift from God. This weekend we are having an "ABC Party" and she is very excited. It is so fun to see the unfiltered joy of a child and share in that with her.

Happy Birthday Emily!

Love,
Daddy

Well this coming weekend is a great time of the year, it is the glorious celebration of Easter. I love having my birthday around this time of year, it is a great celebration of life in the greatest of ways. As we look to the cross and see the earthly death of Jesus Christ we can look forward to knowing that Easter Sunday is coming and that death has no sting. Arise and be glorified.

Songs To Listen To... in limited range

Thinny got me so I guess I will respond to the "Name five songs (or artists) that you love but annoy your significant other." I can't say all annoy my wonderful wife but some she just does not care for, also I would not say that all are total loves but do listen to on occasion.

  • Anything by Johny Horton, love it
  • Anything by Toby Keith, will listen if it's on
  • Chris Rice, she will listen if it is on but would not pull up the playlist on her own
  • ... I will have to think on the rest, we like a lot of the same music

Vacation Oh Where Has Thou Gone
[Personal Life] / Permalink / 2007-02-20 07:27:19.0 / Comments [2]

Last week my wife and I were on a very relaxing vacation with some friends down in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach. It was just the right time of the year to catch the whales as they are migrating back to Alaska... right from the beach and our balcony. The rest of the time was dedicated to walks on the beach, sitting by the pool side, reading books, soaking in the sun, playing pool volleyball, eating some great food and just enjoying the time off.

There were a few times that I had on my OpenSolaris t-shirt... but we did not get any pictures during those times. I was going to were it to dinner one night... but I was over ruled and wore a dressier shirt... no worries... since it was Valentines Day and all.

It is great to be home and back with our little girl, oh did we miss her. And, while were gone grandma finished up the potty training that we all ready had a good start on. Our little girl is so proud to let you know she stays dry and weres big girl underwear now. Yeah for her!!!

Gearing Down, Gearing Up
[Personal Life] / Permalink / 2007-02-06 11:02:45.0 / Comments [2]

A well earned vacation is just around the bend. The expansion will be opening this Sunday (02.11.2007) at our church and I have been leading the building expansion committee for the last two years. So I am gearing down what I am working on here at Sun right now and trying to ensure that I have my bases covered while I am gone. At the same time I am gearing up, all be it a slow relaxing gear, for the vacation time... More on that when I get back and no, there will not be posts from the pool side even though we are taking the laptop... but that is just to stay in contact with the grandma that will be watching our little beauty.

RSV Yucky
[Personal Life] / Permalink / 2007-01-24 12:02:06.0 /

Our little one came down with a nasty little bug. After a couple days of having a great morning at day care then then spiking a temp we headed into the doc and the tests show positive for RSV. Now onto continuing to manage the temps with meds, keeping the fluids up, and washing almost everything a lot. It is no fun to see the the little one spike a nasty temp and just be out of sorts. Wait 30 minutes after the meds hit and she is back to her normal loving and playful self.

Sleep and Drywall
[Personal Life] / Permalink / 2007-01-16 11:13:33.0 /

This weekend was a wonderful time to relax. On Monday we (my wife and myself) had a chance to sleep in... rare with our little girl... we were able to sleep in until 7:30! Can you believe that, yes an extra 90 minutes of sleep that normally don't show themselves. After that we spent the day finishing some prep and starting to hang drywall in our basement. Yikes I was not wired to be a drywall hanger. I can do it but I can tell you I am not leaving my career to be a professional drywall installer. Anyways, picture to come soon and the basement has until April to be finished.

It was only a matter of time
[Personal Life] / Permalink / 2007-01-12 10:06:51.0 /

Well thanks to David who got Thin Guy I was hit. When I saw the headline on Thin Guys feed I just had a feeling I was going to be one of his to get... and alas we are here now. I have to say that before I begin I am a little worried about Thin Guy and his #1 item on his list... Onto the answers.

  1. I started out college pursuing a degree in computer engineering before switching to computer science... I just did not grasp some of the EE side... two for one, I did not even take the final in my EE 101 course and still passed with a C... maybe I did grasp some of it.
  2. As a younger lad I sacked groceries and stocked shelves to pay for my auto fuel and Mt. Dew needs. I was one of the fastest bag boys and there were a few of us that would basically race as we were sacking orders. At one point they started calling me "flipper" as I would flip through the air items from one had to the other.
  3. I barely even drank coffee before I got to college and now I have a whole blog category for it.
  4. I have now worked for three different unix vendors. Cray, SGI, and Sun.
  5. I give my mother a ton of credit for surviving raising me as a single mother... holy cow I think I have it rough when my wife is out of town for a couple of days. Thanks Mom.

Proud Parent: Potty Sucess
[Personal Life] / Permalink / 2006-11-27 16:25:01.0 / Comments [3]

For those that are parents you will enjoy this post... for those that are not you might just want to skip to your next reading for the day. This last holiday weekend we started to go upstairs after breakfast and have our little girl sit down on the potty chair. This worked well and we have success with number one, that there was rejoicing after each success. Tonight after dinner we headed upstairs to get ready for a bath. Before the bath I asked our little one if she had to go potty... "no", but then very shortly she said "yes". So we headed in and sat down on the potty chair. After starting a book we heard a little plop and then she proclaimed "all done". There was great rejoicing. We cleaned up and flushed and then mommy and our little one headed off to finish getting ready for the bath while daddy got the bath ready and finished cleaning up the potty chair. After running back into the bathroom naked as only a little toddler can she was wait for the bath and said "potty". She then proceeded to lift the lid, have a seat and went number one. Well let me tell you there was great rejoicing. Proud Parents indeed.

Side note for that are interested, she is 19 months, 2 weeks and 1 day old.

Just completed the complete transition of my personal website from Lunarpages to 1&1. I had first caught thier add in a magazine while hanging out at the coffee house. I am happy with their level of service and lower rates. A few months back I helped to switch our church to 1&1. If you are looking for a new hosting service please consider them.

Well Done Good And Faithful Servant
[Personal Life] / Permalink / 2006-10-27 08:22:14.0 /

I just recieved the news that our brother in Christ has done home to live with his Heavenly Father. For those that have been praying for Aaron I want to say thank you and please continue to pray for his family and friends now.

Aaron Varner, 19, finished his race and now lives cancer-free with our Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, who walked with Aaron through his two and a half year battle with colon cancer.
We love you Aaron and miss you tremendously. You have been an inspiration to many people.

I can hear Christ calling him home and speaking these words:

Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness! Matthew 25:21

For his Life was worth it.

We have an awesome young man of God that is battling cancer and appears to be near the end of his fight. There is still a chance the Lord will bring about a miraculous healing of his body. Aaron is big fan of the Price Is Right show on CBS. Today he received a personal from Bob Barker and some of the Barker Beauties. Bob mentioned that on tomorrow (10.27.2006) show he was going to send out a personal greeting to Aaron. Thank you CBS. And please pray for Aaron and his family in this time of need.

Passing of a Great Man of God
[Personal Life] / Permalink / 2006-09-15 12:24:34.0 /

It is not a secret on this blog that I am a devout Christian and today I received news of the passing of one of the pastors that confirmed me. When growing up in my teen years in Valley City, ND we attended Trinity Lutheran Church. While I was there the church had a few different pastors but the main ones that I remember are Pastors Michael and Karen Holberg-Smith. I can recall asking Pastor Michael some deep theological questions and he always had a great way to make even a youth understand it. This is the first time that I can recall having a pastor that I know pass on, there is the sting of death that will be upon our hearts but we can take great joy in the saving grace that we have through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I know that in my own time I will see Pastor Michael again on the other side of heaven.

Peace be with you.
