OpenSolaris Bible sample chapters

This is just a quick note to publicize the fact that additional sample chapters from OpenSolaris Bible are now available for free download in PDF form from opensolaris.com. The Table of Contents, Index, and Chapter 1 were previously posted on the book's web site, but we didn't feel that was a particularly representative sample of the book's content, since Chapter 1 is really introductory material to the overall OpenSolaris project, while the remaining 900+ pages are about the technology. As a result, we've worked with Wiley and the OpenSolaris marketing team (and thanks to both for supporting this!) to provide free downloads of additional contents to give potential buyers a better sample of the book.

Chapter 3 should be especially valuable to those new to OpenSolaris, as it's a 54-page "crash course" introduction to using OpenSolaris, introducing you to the basics you'll need in the first day or two after installation. Chapter 8 covers ZFS, and is more representative of the bulk of the book: it's a 40-page tour of the capabilities of this key feature of OpenSolaris.

I hope you'll find these samples useful and thank all those who've already bought the book!

I don't seem to see anyone mentioned the following, but I thought it is important enough to point it out.

While it is more convenient (and "cheaper") to order from Amazon.com, to achieve maximum publicity (for OpenSolaris sake), we also need to somehow organize a concerted effort to ensure that this book has a "continued" shelf space presence in national bookstore chains including Barns and Noble and Borders.

We can do as much as we could on the web, but nothing beats a physical presence in the form of a book wherein SysAdms and/or other Solaris wannabes can flip through its pages and get the needed info in less than a few minutes.

Book publishers regularly pay bookstores to keep their books on the shelf. However, bookstore managers also appreciate inputs from their customers, especially when it comes to the selection of technical books.

My experience is that, when I order a book from B&N, more often than not, the store manager will also order at least another copy to place on the shelf. It is not difficult to imagine the scope of benefits an investment of less than $50 can generate--it can be enormous.

I would also encourage CA's (campus ambassadors) and other Solaris enthusiasts to try to talk to local bookstores to arrange promotional meetings.

Thanks, Wayne; that is another interesting viral marketing strategy. Jerry spotted it in one B&N in Colorado Springs, I haven't had a chance to visit any of the local stores yet to check for it.

Hi,
i am from india, and i am very enthusiastically waiting for the release of the book...in indian market. In the world of open source INDIA is not behind now a days in terms of contribution to the opensource community,so i think we cannot ignore the contributors from india...well, when i made an enquiry about this book in indian market...most of the book retailers told me that till date the indian release of this book has not been done.So, i kindly make a request to make a indian release of this book also...so that a considerable amount of contribution can also be done from our side...

We unfortunately have very little control over where it's released, as that's the publisher's domain, contractually. We do try to identify opportunities to pass along, but that's about as much as I can do.
