Solaris Installation strategy

I expect today and the next couple of weeks will be very interesting and busy, as I've just published the document I've been working on for most of the last two months, a proposed Solaris Installation strategy, to the OpenSolaris Installation and Packaging community. If you're interested in participating, please see the discussion thread.

One thing that I ran into at the last minute was that the OpenSolaris site wouldn't let me upload the Flash mockup that we've done for the interactive flow, as that's not a supported file type on the current OpenSolaris site, so I've attached it to my blog for now.

Would you mind if I added this as a link to the OpenSolaris Big Doc List? I don't know just how "ready" you think it may be--your comments indicate that you may still have some doubts. Thanks. Rainer

I'm not opposed to linking from anywhere, but it does seem a little different from most of what's on the Big Doc list, in that it's a work in progress describing future functionality rather than a how-to or documentation of existing functionality. Up to you how it might fit, though.

The new installer would go to great lengths to help uptake of Solaris by less technical types. I've got a friend I'll telling about Solaris and he likes what I have to say, but has a hard time with the installer and is turned off to Solaris before he's even got it installed on his hardware. Of course, I'm helping him along in his education, but any improvement to making the installer easier would be helpful.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't had a chance to read over the whole article yet, but I don't have any problems posting a "future directions" link. I can present it that way, and it may even provide you (and the OpenSolaris developers as a whole) with some valuable feedback. :-)

I'll try to look at it this weekend, and see how to best "present" the link.

I assume the partitioning tool is only to demonstrait appearance and will actually allow modification of more than one volume.

The flash movie at this point is very much a "concept car" that's far from production-ready. The goal was to gauge reaction to some of the basic ideas and flow which are described in the Caiman document. It'll certainly require more details, and probably look quite a bit different, by the time it's actually functioning.

I had a chance to read the whole article this weekend, and I just have to say, you've summarized everything that is wrong (and outdated) quite nicely. I'm looking forward to what comes out of the OpenSolaris Install group. Caiman sounds like a very good goal. Rainer
