I could not believe my eyes. I was watching the final race of the MotoGP championship race last weekend and at first, I saw what I expected to see...Valentino Rossi on pole. Nicky Hayden was on the second row in 5 th position...not good. I was all set to see Rossi take the championship. Not because Hayden isn't capable of winning, but because Rossi is one of those competitors that always seems to find a way to win when he really wants it.

From there, however, I saw Rossi do five uncharacteristic things. The race started and Rossi got a bad start, moving back to 7 th position (#1 – Rossi usually has very good starts). Hayden was just in front of Rossi and starting to move up the pack. Rossi started moving back (#2 – Rossi doesn't move back very often). After the first few laps, Hayden had moved up to second position. Rossi must have felt the urge to get to the front quick instead of being patient (#3 – Rossi is known as a patient rider who seems to do better as the race progresses). Suddenly, Rossi lost the front-end of his bike and crashed (#4 – a Rossi crash is a rarity). He was able to pick the bike up, but returned to the race in 19 th position. From there, he moved up to end the race in 13 th or 14 th position (#5 – even with a crash, Rossi typically moves up the pack relatively quickly).

Hayden finished 3 rd behind the two Ducati's of Troy Bayliss and Loris Capirossi with enough points to win the 2006 MotoGP Championship.

Congratulations Nicky!

Yeah, that race was something! I had lost all hope for Nicky after Pedrosa took him out at Estoril. Did you see Nicky nudge Rossi just after the start? They were rubbing elbows as Nicky went past. I've attended 5 MotoGP races in Europe - LeMans, Catalunya (twice), Brno, and Jerez..There's absolutely nothing like being at the races over there! Laguna Seca is a blast, but it just can't compare to the magnitude of the races in Europe - those fans are totally nuts!

Yes, I saw Nicky's on-board camera as he passed Valentino and like you said, they were rubbing elbows. I've been to all the MotoGP races at Laguna Seca since they've come back to the U.S. and I even worked this year's race as a track worker...can't get much closer then that. I haven't been to any MotoGP races other then the U.S. GP...maybe someday.

I've gone to Laguna every year since 1999, for WSBK and then MotoGP. I've ridden that track too, what a blast! You ever do any track work for the AFM? I raced with AFM from 2001 to 2005. Had to take this year off due to a broken leg I suffered in a street crash in April. D'OH!!! Had fun getting doted on by all the umbrella girls in July while my buds wheeled me around the paddock in my wheelchair!

Yes, I attend both the Laguna Seca and Sears Point (I refuse to call it Infineon) professional races when they have them. I have been on both tracks, I do a couple of track days a month. My best time at Laguna is 1:46 on a '98 CBR900RR and 1:55 at Sears on a ZX-10R. I haven't raced, though I'd like to...I can't afford it.
