Expectations- great or limiting, can do much to set the stage for your success or failure as an individual, a team, or a company. Just the same as computers work to the laws of logic-- garbage in, garbage out... so do our minds and collaborative efforts.
I have heard it said, 'The person you will be 30 days from now depends upon the books you read, the people you associate with, and the thoughts you think.' Great Change Agents recognize the importance of clarity on articulating the work to be done, how to get organized to accomplish it, and who needs to be involved in getting it done. These are the possibility people that are concerned about creating a favorable outcome, and helpful in providing solutions alone or part of a larger group.
Great Expectations: Looking for reasons why your experience, expertise, mix and knowledge combine to create new alternatives. Attributes of a change agent:
* We have seen several opportunities not tried, this could deliver value.
* What we need to do is leverage our strengths differently for the long term.
* Its not negative to see weaknesses, it is negative to ignore reality.
* If everything happens for a reason, we surely have great things on the way!
Limiting Expectations: Looking for patterns of 'been there, done that', experiences where your expertise seems more steeped in what minefields to avoid, than what solutions to embrace. Attributes of the 'anti-change' agent.
* So you want me to join again. Do you know how many times this failed?
* It's been tried before, and we lack the talent, team and vision to do it.
* If it's to be, it's up to me-- there is too much risk to your vision.
* What's the point in trying to win, when we have already lost.
It really boils down to us realizing the power of our own thoughts whether optimistic or pessimistic, we DO affect others, as we are affected by the company we keep. The difference between a short heroic effort and a proven demonstrated leader is the reputation, the integrity, and the steadfast activity that keeps them creating new solutions, opporutunities, and value.
