Confused over Sun Microsystems' access management products?
Well, this is what I know (and all is subject to change). Currently we have the following products in release or development:
- Access Manager 7.0 (Java Enterprise System 4)
- Access Manager 7.1 (Java Enterprise System 5)
- Access Manager 7.1 Single War (with Java EE: http://java.sun.com/javaee/downloads/index.jsp and Netbeans: http://www.netbeans.org/products/enterprise/)
- Federation Manager 7.0
- Federation Manager 7.5
- OpenSSO Single War (https://opensso.dev.java.net/)
- OpenFM Single War (https://opensso.dev.java.net/)
- SAMLv2 Plug-in for AM 7.0 and AM 7.1 Single WAR
- Policy Agents
- Solaris packages with JES
- Standalone ZIP install
The single WAR, available with Netbeans and the Java EE SDK, is the same WAR mentioned above. It is a release for demonstration and developer use only because it is not yet patchable without replacing the full WAR. Also, since the JES5 release slipped, there is a slight difference between the bits in the Java EE SDK and JES5. The bits will be aligned in the next release of the Java EE SDK and Netbeans.
As for OpenSSO, the AM/FM developers now use this as the AM/FM and policy agents CVS trunk. The first release of a product culled from OpenSSO will be Federation Manager 7.5 at the end of the year. FM 7.5 will ship in ZIP form only. What this means is that, at least in the trunk, everything the Access Management team works on has been converged. OpenSSO is our umbrella open source project for the following functionalities: Access, Federation, Web Services, Identity Services, and Policy Agents.
So, what does this mean for these products going forward? As Belinda Carlisle once so beautifully sang (as lead singer for the Go-Go's) "Our Lips Are Sealed".
