Solaris 10 6/06 Released (now with ZFS!)
Update: Downloads should be fine again

Update: we're having a software configuration issue on the SDLC and so the downloads may not be available at the moment. They should be working soon.

Today Solaris 10 6/06 shipped, marking the first supported release to include ZFS, Sun's new filesystem.

For a engineers like Jeff, Bill, Matt (and many more) who have spent years perfecting ZFS, today marks a big milestone on a long road. Congratulations to Jeff and the whole team!

A What's New guide is available and downloads of S10U2 are available immediately. A brief summary of some of the new features:

  • ZFS, Sun's revolutionary new filesystem
  • Predictive Self Healing for x64 systems
  • Predictive Self-Healing SNMP trap support
  • Postgres bundled
  • vold service conversion to SMF
  • IPv6 for IPFilter
  • More UDP and TCP/IP performance improvements
  • In-kernel SSL proxy for SSL performance
  • PCI Express support on x86 systems including hotplug
  • Native SATA framework

Actually, the links are currently non-functional. It would be really nice if Sun would properly prepare for heavy loads when they release a new product for download, since this seems to happen every time... leaving most people to wait several days until things are corrected.

Ken, I've forwarded along your message and asked our marketing folks to look into it.

In-kernel SSL proxy for SSL performance

Am I the only one asking myself what an SSL proxy is doing in kernel space ?!?!?

Thank you for the MD5SUMS! I cannot wait to upgrade my home, Linux NFS server!

Hi!

Will the Companion CD be updated?

By the way, it's not available with the core Solaris 10 DVD/CD on the download page...

Thanks a lot!

Peter, The in-kernel SSL proxy is provided for improved performance. One problem (as I understand it) with SSL processing is that it necessitates a series of user/kernel round trips; by offloading SSL processing into the kernel, these can be avoided. Additionally, the kernel can transparently take advantage of any fancy crypto hardware as needed.

This looks awesome! I've been using ZFS under Solaris Express for a while now, and it's definitely the best filesystem I've dealt with yet. However, now that it's in an official release, is it possible to upgrade my Solaris Express install (2/06, b31a) to the official 6/06?
