Solaris 8 Containers, Solaris 9 Containers

In the flurry of today's launch event, we've launched Solaris 8 Containers (which was previously called Solaris 8 Migration Assistant, or Project Etude). Here is the datasheet about the product. Even better: We've also announced that Solaris 9 Containers will be available soon! Jerry and Steve on the containers team have been toiling away like mad to make this possible.

Why the rename? Well, for one thing, it's easier to say :) It also signals a shift in the way Sun will offer this technology to customers:

 • Professional Services Engagement: No longer required, now recommend. It's also simpler to order a SunPS engagement for this product.
 • Partners: (Some of) Sun's partners are now ready to deliver this solution to customers. Talk to your partner for more information.
 • Right to Use: Previously, we provided a 90 day evaluation RTU. Now, the RTU is unlimited. However, you must still pay for support.
I invite you to download Solaris 8 Containers, and give it a try! And as always, talk to your local SE or Sales Rep if you're interested in obtaining support licenses (or any kind of help with) your Solaris 8 (or 9) containers.

Here's Joost, our fearless marketing leader, with an informative talk about the why and how of Solaris 8 Containers.

You you go to download site (link you provided) it still says:

Note: This download comes with an evaluation license for a period of 90 days from your first use. For full support please contact your Sun sales team for the full RTU and service subscription.

It is so confusing if you can or can not use it for free for unlimited period of time.

Why would you want a Solaris 9 container?

@Robert: I'll look into it.

@Ceri: We've identified certain market verticals and geographic regions where Solaris 9 was especially popular. We're keen to persuade those folks to upgrade to the latest and greatest hardware, and so we hope this is a way to speed that along.

@Robert: This text has now been corrected to remove the 90 day clause. It will still say "evaluation" but what that means is that you can't call up and get support without paying for a license.

The updates to the text have not propagated to the website, yet; it may take another 24 hours or so. Also, I posted the wrong download link: go to the Solaris Containers page to get the correct link.

Dan - thank you.

btw: if I want to use etude on a server with a GOLD support I guess (hope) it does cover support for etude and I do not have to buy anything else - right?

Robert,

You can use Solaris 8/9 Containers as much as you like on such a system, but it's a separate software product and you'll need to pay for support if you want support; the support you buy also includes the support of the Solaris 8 runtimes inside of the container. Support is available on a subscription basis.
