Solaris 8 Migration Assistant (Etude) Launch, live from CEC

I was lucky enough to get to attend CEC (Sun's Customer Engineering Conference) in Las Vegas, although not lucky enough to win anything at the casino.  So now, I'm sitting in the CEC System Launch session, and John Fowler is launching the new T5120 and T5220 systems.  Thankfully there is ample wifi here in the hall.

The best news for me is that John just announced the product I've been working on, the Solaris 8 Migration Assistant (or Project Etude) and showed how it can help with migration and consolidation activities.  A FAQ has been posted over here.  That's not to say that you can download and use it now.  But very soon!  I think that these new systems in combination with the Solaris 8 Migration Assistant will make a very tempting combination for our customers who are still running Solaris 8 on older hardware.  You can upgrade and reduce your service costs, rack space, cooling, power costs, and get greater performance and bandwidth.

Etude looks like a great tool to get people on S10 - however you're required to buy premium support, migration service, pay yearly, .... what the...?!?!
Instead of making it simple and just get customores migrate to Solaris 10 which should pay-off later for Sun you're making this hard...

The support and migration services are only required if you want Sun to support your Solaris 8 application running in a Solaris 10 container. Any customer can download Etude for free.

Marc - by reading http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/faq.jsp#q_7_1 it doesn't look like you can use it for free if you do not need support. See:

# What are the software components of the offering?

The Migration Assistant software captures the entire environment of the Solaris 8 source system and then transfers this environment to a Solaris Container running on the target Solaris 10 system. A one year right to use (RTU) for this software is included. Please note that the license is not perpetual. Solaris 8 Migration Assistant 1.0 is now available for download.
# What are the service components of the offering?

The software subscription includes the right to use the software and premium support for one year for Solaris 8 Migration Assistant. The duration of the subscription is on a per year term and must be renewed each year. To learn more about the premium service included with the software subscription visit http://www.sun.com/service/serviceplans/software/overview.xml.

This subscription does not impact the Solaris 8 right-to-use. Customers must have a valid Solaris 8 license and either a Solaris 10 Premium Subscription or a Sun System Gold or Platinum Service Plan. Additionally, customers must purchase the Enterprise Migration Implementation Service to install the Solaris 8 Migration Assistant.
# Why is Solaris 10 support required?

Solaris 10 Premium Subscription or Sun System Gold or Platinum Service plan is required to provide enhanced coverage to maintain high availability. Features include 24/7 online and telephone technical support, SunVIP interoperability support, software releases and updates (patches), self-help tools and notifications.

There are three distinct RTU licenses needed to use Solaris 8 Migration Assistant: 1) RTU for Solaris 8, 2) RTU for Solaris 10, 3) RTU for the Solaris 8 Migration Assistant tool itself. Solaris 10 RTU is available at no cost. Sun has never offered no cost RTU for Solaris 8 because at the time of its release, most customers acquired their Solaris 8 RTU with their Sun hardware. The RTU for the Solaris 8 Migration Assistant itself is also no cost. We are not including a free Solaris 8 RTU with the product because we assume that customers who have Solaris 8 hardware they obtained through authorized channels would already have a valid license and providing a free Solaris 8 license would only benefit customers who had obtained grey market equipment from unauthorized resellers or other non-licensed sources. The wording around "customers must purchase the Enterprise Migration Implementation Service to install the Solaris 8 Migration Assistant" is incorrect, I will have it changed.

Marc - thank you very much for clarification!

However entire paragraph should be revisited:

This subscription does not impact the Solaris 8 right-to-use. Customers must have a valid Solaris 8 license and either a Solaris 10 Premium Subscription or a Sun System Gold or Platinum Service Plan. Additionally, customers must purchase the Enterprise Migration Implementation Service to install the Solaris 8 Migration Assistant.

Solaris 8 RTU - that's fine
Solaris 10 - either Premium Subsscription or Platinum Service - from what you saying it could be entirely removed as S10 RTU is free anyway if that's all what is needed. The last sentence about purchasing Migration Assistant as you said should be changed/removed too.

Thank you for your help.
