The 7 year scratch
Yesterday marked my seventh year at Sun. In that time I've:
  • Worked in two distinct workgroups (or is it 3?)
  • Submitted 520 bugs
  • Fixed 145 bugs (is that all? damn)
  • Received 270,000 emails (many automated, but still a lot)
  • Sent (actually composed) 24,500 emails (or 10 per day, every single day)
  • Had seven managers (well, six, with two non-consecutive terms by one of them)
  • Travelled (for Sun) to New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, San Diego, LA, Seattle, Tokyo, and Singapore.
  • Presented to more than 1,000 people at various customer engagements.
  • Accumulated 20GB of junk in my home directory.
It all adds up after a while...

Congratulations, Dan! That's a very impressive list! I also think 145 fixed bugs is a lot! :)

Interesting, I have a very similar set of stats. I've been a round Sun a little bit longer, I'm almost at 9 years (as of December this year) I've also had quite a few managers (10 managers (again 9 really with 2 non consective terms) and my last manager has been my manager for 3 years now), yet I've only had three jobs (service, sustaining and development). I'm not on my 3rd country (UK, US and now Ireland). According to Bugster I've submited 702 bugs (177 of those are unfixed - that I think is a pretty good ratio of log to fix/close). I have 442 bugs where I am the RE and the fix is either delivered or the bug is closed. That doesn't mean I've fixed 442 just that I've closed that many. It is a little hard to work out quickly which ones I actually delivered fixes for - especially since it isn't all one consolidation. Its also a little different for me since I spent the first 3 years in SunService so I logged a lot of bugs on behalf of customers calling in so chances are I logged a lot of stuff I didn't personally see. My personal favourite Sun trip was to Florence in Italy (twice!).

There's a KM project there for sure - if you've kept up all that info then you should have a play with putting www.popsearch.net and www.tagcloud.com together. I wonder what the common theme of your data would be? Pain or Pleasure :-) I think after 7 years you should be pleased to have ridden through some tough times and seen the industry mature.
