Life's little successes
There is a healthy discussion on an alias I'm on about the merits, or lack there of, of the ease of installation of the major OSes. I'm not going to wade into that mess, as I've experienced both ends of the spectrum for most popular OSes. But it did make me appreciate a recent little 'success' I had yesterday.I had a several year old SPARC based laptop Sun Ray server still running Sun Ray Server Software 2.0, and decided it was way overdue for an upgrade. So, I ran utpreserve, which easily found the existing 2.0 install and saved the whole config. I copied the resulting file for backup, in case of trouble, and proceeded to do a utinstall. The utinstall process immediately found the utpreserve data, and after me taking the defaults, proceeded to upgrade my Sun Ray Server Software 2.0 install, CAM included, to Sun Ray Server Software 3.1.
One reboot later, for my sanity vs a requirement, and voila, I was now running Sun Ray Server Software 3.1 with the same configuration, without me having to change anything. Exactly what I expected, but appreciated more because of the tales of OS install woes I've been following this morning. Good work, Sun Ray engineers. But if you keep this up, I might be out of a job. :-)
