I have this discussion with co-workers sometimes about how Sun can grow in the marketplace with the products we have.  It seems to me that it will be difficult for us to win back marketshare if our products are at par with our competitors' products, whether they be hardware or software products.  From what I can see, it looks like our product groups are focusing on making the individual products better than the competition, but I believe that it doesn't work to be at par or even 20% better than the competition by any measure: at this point, Sun has to be twice as good or ten times as good as the competition.  By and large, being 10x better than the competition doesn't sound achievable to me.

So I was pleasantly shocked to see this recent benchmark result, which shows Sun's application server benchmark beating the competition by a factor of 10:1 in price-performance (in other words, Sun provides application server customers ten times more bang for the buck).

This benchmark result carries several important messages.  First, it shows that Sun has solutions for companies hit hard by the current world economic woes: companies need to spend on technology but money is tight, so companies must find a lower-cost solution to their basic infrastructure needs.  There is no better time than now to look at Sun's products to solve IT problems.

Second, it shows that Sun has the unique ability to provide integrated value to our customers with intelligent combinations of Sun's hardware and open source software products.  This benchmark uses Sun x64 servers running the OpenSolaris operating system, MySQL database, and Glassfish application server.  All of these software components are open source, and the integration of these components is what ultimately gives us the 10-to-1 advantage over the competition.

Third, and most importantly for Sun employees, this benchmark result shows that Sun will grow again only if we focus on integrating the value of our components; individual product excellence is not a winning strategy, but working harder than ever to make our products work together (i.e., integrating value) can give us order-of-magnitude advantages over the competition.  I'll write more about this soon, because I think it is the single most important thing Sun employees can do to help the company get back to where we all want to be.
