Things on my mind. George Drapeau's Weblog

I gotta admit: this is not my absolute most fun blog entry I've written, but I figure the information I put here will be helpful to a few people so it's worth the time to write it.

Sun's going to have a layoff pretty soon, as are so many U.S. companies that we're hearing about in the news.  And I don't know how many people think ahead about how to prepare for being laid off.  It's not something one generally wants to spend a lot of time thinking about.

But there is a great podcast that I started listening to a few months back, called "Manager Tools".  The two hosts talk about every aspect of management and I've found quite a few tips that I try to incorporate into my own bag of manager tools.

Anyway, they have a two-part podcast about how to prepare for layoffs called "The Annual Layoff Immunization".  This is not just for managers; it is meant for anybody who is in the workforce.  Just to be clear: the podcast does not tell you how to avoid a layoff.  It just helps you prepare for that moment when your manager meets with you to notify you that your position has been eliminated, and by the way, you need to exit the building by the end of that business day.  That is not the time to start thinking about going through your email to extract contact info for your network.

Here is part one.

Here is part two.

Not a fun topic, but I have listened to both parts, and found it useful information.
