The Ask Jeeves' Desktop Search seems to be the best one among the crops. It is incredibly fast and simple. The results return almost instantaneously. It searches desktop, not like Google, separately from web and without ads. So it has much less exposure for virus.

I don't like desktop search I use "find " or "locate"

To mike:
But its result is not so good to use. As to the result, I think Googls's DS is best :P.

To chenqj:
There's no such command in Windows. All these products are for Windows. :P

This zdnet article says: Desktop search tools a virus writers' best friend:
"Companies should not deploy a desktop search tool without first considering the security implications because they could end up helping virus writers, say security experts.

To Chandan
I agree that these products are all not very good from the security view. So, all these are preview or beta :P.

So Sun should have their version out by 2009, right? And of course, they'll market it as the Java Search...

I think Sun should have such plan, and if it is implementd with Java, why not name it as Java Search? :P

To Elan: I don't understand what you mean 'the result is not so good to use'. It is not only lightning fast, you can work on the result directly. Double click on file to open or start program. When you are in Word, Excel, etc., the search tool bar is always sit on top of File Open dialog. You can find file by search on content and locate it immediately. Very nice. No need to navigate thru folder by folder anymore. Window Explorer would have to take back seat. Obviously, 'security' is a separate challeging issue for each Search vendor to deal with. Ask Jeeves' version doing the search sepatate from web, so it is isolated from the web. Google mix PC and web search together. It is very confusing and more prone for virus.

To Mike:
Yes, if the result is a word or pdf file, it's fine to open it through a link. But if the result is a conversation in log such as MSN log, I think what I want most is the conversation but not the "sfsfdsfsdf23234324.xml", right? I think from the IM log and email result view, Google's DS is most helpful to me. And I agree that Google's mixing of PC and web search is not so good. I feel unsafe. :P.
